Question OEM focus RS Mk1 ECU or Motorsport Electronics ME422

Hello all, sorry if this is the wrong section. Im building a Zetec turbo (GT28Rs forge parts ect) and im looking at ECUS, I did see that you can use a standard focus RS ECU and remap it and was considering getting in touch with a sutable tuner who can do this if i went this route. Although ive come across Motorsport Electronics ecus ME422 which sounds quite intresting but im wondering if anyone has experiance and rates it compaired to OMEX ect?

Many thanks

My son's running Omex on his FRS MK1, piggy backed on to the standard Ford ECU. Plenty of people with experience of mapping with Omex, unsure about the other ecu you mention.
I think the general advice given is to choose who you want to map the thing and see which system they prefer it recommend

Whats your RPM limit? the RS limit is 7000rpm, or at least it was a few years ago.

I dont think i would rev it more than that, although the block is built strong for reliability.

Ive got 442 on mine mate ask me anything you want or add me on gram and have a look etc ive done a rough base map myself but the ME boys will be taking care of it for me next month. The support they offer is what won me over, over all the other ecu brands i contacted. It totally depends what you want from an ECU, OMEX 600/710 are both super capable for the zetec and there are some awesome mappers out there, i wanted to go with something different and ME fit what i was after plus they are only down the road from me!

There aren't many firms that can custom tune the oem ecu. Sabre being one.
I haven't used them as mine isn't run in yet.
can you offer any feed back bigdel ?
Do the figures stand up ?
Any reason your son went stand alone after Sabre ?

Cheers

There was something he said about the standard ECU suffering from a 'cough' under certain conditions which is widely acknowledged, which could result in engine damage. That's why he went Omex 710. The Omex loom is tied into the standard ECU so dashboard works normally.
standalone also gives you many extra functions over std, launch control, anti lag, flat foot shift etc. I guess it all depends on what you want.
Recently mapped and dyno'd at 480 bhp on high boost (1.9 bar)

Thanks for the reply,

I assumed the “cough” would be mapped out. Every day is a school day.
Yep I am familiar with piggy backing as the more modern the vehicle the more one system demands a response from another system. Ie the Rs dash has few sensors of its own. Instead getting data along the bus from the ecu.

So Sabre don’t have as much control over the ecu as they say.

I also wondered how they where getting 400bhp+ out of a modified Gt25 exhaust housing.

He had a Sabre 450R turbo on previously which they said was good for 450hp, but it would have been flat out, boosting around 28psi. He ran it at 24psi and achieved 401hp
The car now has a Garrett G25-660 which can deliver much more than he'll need so nowhere near it's limit. Limiting factors are now injectors, pump and the head

Talking to a tuner on the subject their view was that the ME ecu's were very good with variable valves etc so are required for st170 engines and the like, but would give no benefit on a basic turbo engine as it is simpler to control so an older ecu will do the job, depending on what functions you are after. I was told that Emerald customer service is slow, Omex is very good but they now prefer DTA

As usual the advice is to speak to the person who is going to map the car

Use whatever your tuner can give you the best result with.

Thanks guys

I'll get in touch with some tuners. I've had experiance with omex 710 some time back, but now there are loads. I did like the look of the me422 but they seem to be quite new and cant find much info.

Thanks again

I used sabre in the past and the car drove great, but figures are bit ott.
used again last year just to get a car sorted to sell and map was pretty poor.
Far too rich, idle was poor and made 100hp less on another dyno after.

Thanks for the info.

My party trick is running the Ford engine on the OEM ecu.
So, I build the engine to match the map so I have plug and play drivability. Standard Is never enough though.
I will stick with the oem and go stage 2 with it but if I want more I will go stand alone.
