Default 17" wheel tyre choices

Hi all, I currently have 17" Compomotive TH2's fitted with Toyo T1-R 205/45/17 tyres, they look very stretched as the rim is 17x8 do you think i would be able to fit anything wider car is a 2wd Sapphire Cosworth.
I would like some better tyres than the Toyo's as they are awful with slight bit of dampness on the roads. Anyone got any good recommendations for tyres and sizes and where from?

Good idea going for wider front tyres, it is one of my pet hates seeing wheels with tyres that are to small for them!

I hope they will be enough. Had to beat the crap out of my wheel arches to get them to fit!

I too have 8x17 TH2’s on my saff and on the rear I have 215/45/17 AR1’s but as already mentioned they come up more like 225/50’s due to them being a squarer shaped track tyre.
on the front I have regular 215/40’s.

I hate the stretched/euro look on any rim/car tbh.

don’t forget if it’s for grip that’s not all about how wide your tyres are... it’s about the compound of them

Cheers Paul

Hi...I only have a pic from the side .. and on paper ( it was some years ago ) .. and on that pic I actually tried to put both 245s on the right side just to see if they would clear the struts and they did but I would have destroyed the arch if I took it for a spin ..

A lot of people still think you can lower your car and fit very wide tyres without doing any arch work. On a Saff it is not possible although there will now be people saying you can!!

This is very true, I have 215/35/18 Toyo T1R's on my 8x18 comps and the tyres look stretched. My mate has 215/35/18 Rainsport 3 on his 8x18 comps and has a flat sidewall plus the tyres look wider than mine when you put the 2 cars next to each other.

I take it there is no arch mods and you get no rubbing etc?

My 2wd Saff is lowered 30mm and I have 17inch old scholl OZ Cronos alloys with 215/40/17 Federal 595 RSR track day tyres front and back. Arches are rolled front and back for clearance.

The tyres would rub without the rolled arches

That is because your ride height is not anywhere as low as mine. Look how much clearance you have between the top of the tyres and the arches.

Yours has a better ride height compared to Cossynuts car.

Will also be better for traction and handling.

You don't really have to experience a 'problem' with it, but indeed it can be better. With the standard rear beam you get a lot of negative camber which reduces traction and excessive toe in which causes understeer. With an adjustable 6 degree beam you can correct both camber and toe. And the 6 degree part of the beam will also cure a lot of understeer as it has much less bump steer than the standard beam.

On the front a very low ride height with standard 2wd Sapph knuckles causes a low front roll centre which creates more body roll and again understeer. Fitting 3dr knuckles solves this and gives a much nicer steering feel as well.

But of course it depends a lot on what you find important. I find the handling of the car more important than the actual power, as I enjoy good handling more than huge amounts of power.

nice looking tyre, what is it Mark?

I always run 205/40 17 on my Sapphire, the problem with having different size tyres front and rear is you can’t rotate them to get the most out of them

Marc ,I have never noticed any handling problems and people that have been out with me say my car holds the road well and corners flat.I do not use it as a racing car so getting the absolute ultimate handling is not vital. It has a good mix of power and handling but no doubt could be improved .

Wow, that is tight! Do you have more clearance on the inside, or is it tight there as well?

Original pic shows car on bump stop with no spring or shock and nothing adjusted on the 6 degree beam, I've taken out a bit of the rear camber since so it might be worse now!

Pic below with as fitted beam also on bump stop.

The inside is fairly close to the coil over.

Once suspension is set up I could machine a little off the wheel face to increase the ET to gain a little clearance if needed.

Disc bells are around 8mm thick and push the wheels out a bit...

What is the wheel size you are using? I have 17x8 ET35 wheels with 215/40 tyres and with the 6 degree beam it is already quite tight with the arch, even though it has been rolled.

8x17 ET40 on the rear, probably closer to ET36 with the extra thickness of the aluminium brake bells though.
