2wd or 4x4
Probably been asked many times. Looking to get a white sierra cosworth. I would prefer 2wd.
Is it better to get a 4x4 and turn it 2wd as it has the better block and few other changes. Is it more reliable?
Or will it not matter? I would only be going 360 - 400bhp.

Personal preference at the end of the day.....the list of pros and cons is endless.
Factors to consider......your budget....either go all out or get a rolling project....
You say a sierra cosworth, if so thats a 3dr and 2wd unless modified to 4wd.
Sierra sapphire cosworth....untold options available but again its your budget that will ultimately decide what route you go.
I always set out to get a 4x4 sapphire as i wanted a later model car.

The 4x4 (200) block is stronger, but this is only of importance if going for big power, which you state you are not.
The 4x4 (YBJ or YBG) engine was revised over the 2WD, mainly a better cooling system, although I have never had an issue with the original system.
Ford stated that 85% of parts were either new or changed over the YBB.
The 2WD makes up for this in so many different areas, by the fact it has the stronger gearbox and diff, as well as having better brakes.

Are you talking about getting a Sapphire Cosworth as they are the only ones to come in a choice of 2wd or 4x4. No 3 door Cosworth models came in 4x4 version. As others have said the standard 205 block will cope ok with the potential power you want.Getting a perfectly good 4x4 Saff and converting it to 2wd would be a costly waste of time imo. Your problem will be finding a rust free 2wd in good condition as there now only seems to be 2 types around, long term enthusiast owned in very good condition or dog rough ones that will need loads of money spent to restore it. Depends on what you have available to spend and if you want one that is turn key ready to go or a project. There are probably more modified ones with various stages of tuning than there are standard ones but if the modifications have been done right you can still have a 30 year old Saff with the performance of a modern car! Good luck with getting one.

I have had my 2wd for over 24 years , it's only 450 bhp but I have had a few "moments" in it but I am used to it and never get tired of the buzz when it's on full boost!! Never driven a 4x4 Saff but Richard at Tremona Garage also says the 2wd is the best one to drive.
