Yes, cracks are very common on 4x4 exhaust manifolds......cant recall seeing one without any cracks TBH So just a question of avoiding badly cracked ones

If you are going to get a damper anyway, then why not use a 2WD manifold instead of the 4WD one? The 2WD item is better for big power and there are 2 or 3 dampers designed for it.........

4wd exhaust manifold means you dont need a damper.. i dont think a damper will fit.

adamper will fit spec-r do one

4wd manifolds are worse for cracking than 2wd

but a 2wd is better if u want big power etc

If you change to 2WD fanimold does that mean you have to change your downpipe to a 2WD one?

I've heard the 2WD manifolds are a pain to fit with the engine in, is this just because they are much bigger or because you need some decent shaped tools for the job?.....do they use the same studs as the 4x4?

Nope, cos I had one on my 4x4 head.

The idea is you fit a damper when you have the 2wd manifold and 4x4 head combination, as the 4x4 head doesn't have the lug that a 2wd head has to run the std damper.

Why you'd want to run a damper on a 4x4 manifold is beyond me.

yep, won't have any effect on the cracking we are talking about here, that's purely temperature-induced

Phewwww, I've been told not so long ago that a t-damper was unnecessary on a 4x4 and started to have second thoughts, that clears things up. Thanks Rich/Nath

Mine is like that any any other 4x4 manifold I've seen. It isn't crack to the outside and it doesn't cause any problems.

yeah, exactly, the crack in mine is just on the internal casting web, no sign of it at the outside.

CossieCrew - Was the person who sold you the cracked one called Andy perchance?

My manifold has a crack in it too, has had for at least 2 years, and doesnt cause any chew at all

You can have them welded up as well if needed.

Neil.

Have anyone used steel exhaust manifold in a Cosworth, do they generally give extra horsepower, and who makes them? Atleast in N/A engines steel manifolds gain quite a few bhp compared to the cast iron scrap.
