Hi all...my son in laws 2004 ka 1.3 has an intermittent not wanting to start when cold.

The battery is fine it turns the engine over quite quickly and doesn't give up.

This is the second time its done this and he has ended up catching a train to work and arriving late.

I was with him this morning when he tried to start it...key in crank over the engine...it tries to fire but wont fully start this is without throttle...

Give it throttle and it wont even try to fire.

When it failed last week he left it 30 mins and tried again and started an ran as normal.

I suspected a part blocked fuel filter old one we found out has not been changed in 100.000mls...bought a new one but not been able to fit it yes due stuck quick release fitting...looking into that at present.

How would we test the fuel pump?

Any ideas guys.

 

I use these for work had 3 now very reliable try spark plugs cheapest option first then starter motor I do 4k a month in mine drop the oil every 10k change plugs at 20k

 

Sounds like its flooding if its starting 30mins later tbh. Easily checked, but a service certainly wont do any harm as the plugs/leads etc could be breaking down and producing a poor spark

 

Plugs quite new.

 

Never start these with foot on throttle, will cause flooding as above.

 

Can you look at the live data and see what the coolant temp sensor is reading from cold?

 

Studabear...I have a basic fault code reader and a more in depth one on an old laptop...I can give that a try looking at the coolant temp...why what are you thinking.

Managed to replace the very old fuel filter this afternoon...while it was off I turned on the ignition to see what flow the petrol pump was giving...petrol blasted out of the pipe.

Will see how it goes now.

Starter motor is fine spins engine quite fast...plugs changed around a year ago I think...but I will take em out and have a look and re gap if necessary.

 

Coolant temp sensor I think will be what tells the ECU temperature so it can add extra fuel for you cold start ie choke

 

Would a duff sensor cause a fault warn light...non showing.
