Default Wheel Bearings

Hiya,

I have a 2wd sapphire cosworth & I must have gone through 10-12 wheel bearings over the last 4/5 years. I do about 4000 miles a year & I have changed them on all 4 corners numerous times. I was wondering if anyone else had this issue.

Cheers

Simon

Not that I have read about, there was one that had judder after a ring trip which had new bearings to try and solve it.

I wonder if your stub axles might have play in them perhaps or something like that?

I have the Wrc hubs on my 4x4 pug cossie and those bearings are huge, I believe they are Ford Transit bearings.

I have bought bearings from Graham Goode, Anembo Engineering, Burton & other motor factors all with the same results. It seems strange that all four corners go as well. My last 2 drivers side fronts have done 200 & about 1000 miles before going.

That doesn't make sense at all. I assume you can't just tighten them after 1000 miles once bedded in?

Not sure to be honest. Sometimes the bearings have collapsed, or just whine like hell. I'm not sure if the grease is up to standard as it looks like the bearing & grease have got too hot. I always tighten the nuts up to the correct torque settings so not sure must to do.

There is something going on that is not normal. I recently had new rear wheel bearings fitted on the rear of my 2wd Saff after 67,000 miles. I am not suggesting that you have done anything wrong but maybe you have misunderstood part of the installation prochedure or torque settings?

My father & I have change the bearings half of the time & the rest have been done by garages. I do wonder if we are doing something wrong but father is a fully qualified mechanic & has done this job many times over the years.

We have just bought a new torque wrench, fingers crossed this solves the issue.

How strange? Something isn't right. As you've been through so many it can't be the bearings at fault and as its all four it can't be that all the hubs are at fault surely?

Maybe it is the grease as you suggest?

Ive not changed a bearing on mine in the 12 years I've owned it.

We have bought some new grease now, but we normally use the grease supplied with the bearings. You would have thought that that would have been ok.

How are you getting the old bearings out and new ones in?

Tapping the old ones out with a drift & pressing the new ones in.

Are you using paticularly big wheel spacers or anything like that?

It makes no sense to me either, I have had my 2wd Saff for 22 years, done 67,000 miles in that time to bring the mileage now to 107,000 and I have just changed the rear wheel bearings. Only one side was worn but I changed both to be sure.To be going through all four wheel bearings more than once in such a low mileage is a mystery.

I don't have any spacers but the wheels are ET33, do you think this can you be an issue?

So it's got nothing to do with spacers, and we assume that the bearings and hubs are not at fault.

It must have something to do with the method used for pressing them in or the torque setting?

Maybe your old torque wrench has been doing you no favours at all?

Are you wheels correctly balanced?? Ive heard of wheels not been balanced and the vibration damages the bearings.

Stupid question but are you packing them prior to fitting?

The front drivers wheel does have a slight buckle but they are all balanced. May be time for some new wheels but that doesn't explain all of the bearings going, there not all buckled

The bearings are packed with grease but my father isn't convinced the grease that comes with the bearings is up to scratch.
