Default Knocking sound when slowing down/braking after hitting a deep pothole, what is it ?

I hit a deep pothole about 2 weeks ago , it was dark and I couldn't see it and the car went over it and it must have been a massive pothole, I couldn't walk over to see it as it was on a busy main road/carriageway.

a few days later I heard as very loud knocking kind of noise when the car was slowing down and when braking, however over the past few days the noise comes and goes but when it is there it is very loud and noticeable. It is coming from the front passenger side area.

It's like a knocking/tapping noise when slowing down/applying brakes and usually cannot hear it when picking up speed.

Please share your thoughts/ideas of what this may be and as always thank you so very much in advance for any tips/guidance you may offer.

Regards

Id jack up that side of the car and give the wheel a good shake top and bottom and side to side. Then take the wheel off and have a good look around, especially at the brakes.

Take it to a garage and ask them to fix it at the same time when fixing the infamous leaking oil pipe.

Hello, thank you once again for you kind reply, much appreciated.

I got the bus on several occasions just recently while having the trouble of tightening the turbo oil feed pipe up. It is quite nice having a break from driving sometimes and just relaxing no the bus letting somebody else drive while one relaxes.
thank you for your input , a pleasure hearing from you as always.

hello, thank you for your kind reply.

Now that I have the turbo pipe sorted I can move onto getting this looked at and get it up in the air, however I don't think I can remove the wheel at the moment due to a rounded off wheel nut but will have a go. even if I cannot take the wheel off I will still jack it up and feel the wheel for any play.

I may even take it to Kwik Fit or Halfords as they carry out free suspensions tests.

I will keep you updated.

Your advice is appreciated so much, thanks again.

I have fixed the turbo oil feed pipe, no more leaking oil !

I will jack up the car and feel the wheel for play, as that wheel has a rounded off wheel nut I might be unable to remove the wheel at the moment but we shall see.

I might end up taking it too Halfords or Kwik Fit as both offer free suspension tests.

I will keep you updated.

cheers

hi, thank you for taking time to reply , I appreciate it .

Does the locking wheel nut need to be cut off or what I the best way to remove locking wheel nuts that are rounded off ?
Once I had a rounded off locking wheel nut on the rear which was a problems because I was about to replace the rear brakes (pads + discs) but I used my brothers socket set and it came off fine.

If I use a different socket set do you think it will come off easy ?

please reply when you possible, thanks

I thought long and hard at what the problem could be. I searched the internet and looked in a Haynes manuals. even asked Warren if he had any ideas he did but they was about making a bomb to blow up the mice that eaten his cornflakes.

So guessing that's not much help to you I phoned a friend and all he had to say was that was the end of knowledge I not know where it started his knowledge so not much help again sorry fella.

Have you tried suing the Welsh as it always them at fault for pot holes maybe that wiil help

Buy a fivers worth a petrol and a box of matches, take the vehicle to a secluded spot and pour the petrol over the seats, make sure the occupants are out of the car first and a safe distance away, light a match and throw it on the seat and run, this should solve all your problems and then buy something other than a Ford and annoy another community.

Smack on a socket thats ever so slightly bigger than the wheel nut and just undo it, take around 2 mins

if they are the one's with the ring that spins then chisel that off then knock a socket on and undo it

Had the same symptoms back in 98, turned out to be a bottle of Lilt rolling about under the seat, best get it checked out.
