Default First go at painting a car panel

The boss is wanting to sell his Missus mgf now the sun is here and the back bumper was flaking off everywhere and looked horrific. He asked me if I'd have a go at painting it with rattle cans so I thought while we're quite why not. I managed to get enough time to prep the panel before primer but he didn't want to give me the time to prep it after primer for a proper finish so I had to paint straight on top of the first rough coat. Gutted I couldn't do it properly but had fun anyway.

Thanks mate was gutted I didn't get the time to prep it properly and was very hot when I applied the laquer but mopped the hell out of it this morning and that was the best outcome after a good polish. I think when I polish the rest of the car may look better lol

Cool I'll ask the local supplier next time. I might buy a spray gun and have a practice with it. I'm confused on all the different techniques of mixing paints and thinners and hardeners etc

Looks a good job in the pics so will definitely help it sell. A good polish will do the rest of the car wonders

I had a mk3 vr6 with the rotten wings but got a pair of new vento wings thrown in. Rather than change the whole front end I took the wings off the golf and chopped them under the moulding and then welded in the bottom of the vento wings. Painted them out of cans but the mixed up ones not off the shelf and got a brilliant finish. Guy I bought the car from couldn't belive it was the same original wings with a bit off a fettle

Painted bumpers and wheels etc since then and always come out really good but as you said it's all in the prep and it takes time to do it right but well worth the effort

Yeah next time I'm going to do it for myself so I can do all the prep how I want to and not be rushed and use proper mixed up paint. I'm basically practising because my Cossie desperately needs a full respray but I'll never ever have the thousands of pounds to have someone else paint it so I'm want to practice until I feel confident doing it myself. Next up I want to buy a mk6 escort van and paint that entirely to the colour that my Cossie will be.

the main thing I found that hugely effects the finish quality is to fight the temptation to put to much on in one go. many light mist coats seems to work better . I'm not in the car trade I'm just a diyer but ive got just as good a finish (to my joiners eye anyway) with spray cans bought from the main dealer as what was on the original panels .

Yeah I did lots of lights coats and built it up. I hear people saying u should flat it back between coats but I'm not sure how thick they mean by a coat as it'll prob go on faster and thicker with a professional spray gun?

+1 the prep makes it good but taking your time makes it better

Couldn't tell with the golf. I even impressed myself and I've got raging OCD
