Default Cossie owners with a straight through exhaust

Is it just me or do you get out the car smelling of exhaust fumes?

I've checked all the exhaust elbow's joints, downpipe etc and can't smell any leaks in the engine bay. Almost appears to be coming from the rear of the car, into the boot then in the cabin. I've tried to block the 2 vents either side which improves things.

Am I being too paranoid and overly concious about my health or is this the norm and should I quit whining?

Mongoose turbo back 3" system into a 4" tailpipe.

Cheers

I can't see it being related to a straight through exhaust. If your exhaust is not leaking this would be a general issue with all sapphs, which I'm sure it isn't. Over the years I've done about 230.000 km in sapphs and I've never noticed anything like it. The only time I really smelled exhaust gases in the car was when the exhaust was broken in half right underneath the diff. At least that proves that if it's leaking at the rear silincer joint you can still get fumes into the car.

Point noted dude, although on a cold morning when there's a lot of condensation the vapours exiting the exhaust travel up past the read bumper across the back arch directly where the vents are. Just figured with not having a cat on the car the fumes would be more noticable.

Done a DIY leak test on the exhaust at all the joints and can't find anything.

Just wondered if anyone else's was the same.

Do the rubber flaps on the rear qtr vents still cover the vents properly?

I've not seen any rubber flaps dude. I've just got plastic inserts in the rear quater inside the boot

When standing still I can imagine some fumes entering the car. But when moving the fumes shouldn't get near the vents. Besides that, the purpose of the vents is to get rid of the over pressure in the car that is caused by the air entering through the dashboard from the blower, so again no fumes should come in from the rear.

There should be some thin rubber flaps over the vents to prevent exhaust gasses from entering the car. I ran for years without realising what the problem was

Also engine breathers can allow the smells in to the car if you don't have a 100% sealed bulkhead, maybe a grommet has failed or come out?

I have two sierras (a cossie and a pinto efi) they both have straight through exhausts and they both have a slight smell of fuel when running. The flaps on the vents are all there and there are no fuel or exhaust leaks. I dont really think it is normal but i like the smell and there is no risk of fire since there are no leaks so i dont mind it at all. It seems to be common though.

Check the condition of the boot seal and whether it actually seals against the boot.
