Yep they want you to forget the past and all the great motors and stop comparing old too new..... I wonder why maybe its cos most new are shit and none match up performance wise with past you would expect todays fords to be leaps above past in power etc but oh no

Agree the ad campaign is crap, just like the present Ford range.
Vauxhall and VW have used there old cars to promote there new models, Ford have produced good affordable cars in the past.
IMO there marketing dept is missing a trick.

Tbh i think the the mustang will do well over here. Ive read a few mags which have done tests on them and the mags have rated it.

Just the same as the new Focus RS. Its gonna do really well and i think it will kick ass with the other hot hatches.

Imo the Golf R is fooking boring looking compared to the Focus RS.

The fiesta St is rated by many people as the best car in the world right now
It may not win an prize for best hot hatch, the civic type r got that, but it's almost the benchmark for every other vehicle

It's only an advert lads As for the new cars being crap? You're on crack aren't you?

The RS an ST in drag? Have a word... It's 350bhp and 4WD. How many mechanical components do you think it shares with the ST? The body shell is stiffer, the suspension is different, the drive train is different, the engine is different.

TG magazine have dubbed it the "World's Greatest Hot Hatch" I believe, and the entire motoring press are touting it as a total game changer. The tech in the 4WD system is way beyond the Haldex stuff fitted to all its rivals.

Yes, the Mustang isn't that special but what do you expect? How many other V8 GT cars can you get for under Ł35k?

The Fiesta ST is the absolute go-to car in its segment, it has utterly smashed the opposition, and they're just about to announce an even faster version if the internet rumours are anything to go by.

New GT anyone? I suppose a carbon chassis, 600+bhp, twin turbo super car is also shit

Some utter cobblers in this thread. Some people will never be happy unless they start remaking Escorts and Sierras...

Ford are probably producing some of the best performance cars they've ever produced right now.

but a 2wd saph is still faster, a 3 door is still the best looking car and the escos has other stuff to make it the best

A standard Cossie probably wouldn't see which way a Fiesta ST went, let alone any of the others

See your point about looks. Cossies appeal to middle aged men who couldn't afford them when they were young, but the rest of the world has moved on

I'd say we're doing pretty well these days judging by this list:

Fiesta ST - 200bhp (with a dealer upgrade available to make it 215bhp)
Focus ST - 250bhp (with a dealer upgrade available to make it 275bhp)
Focus RS - 350bhp
Mustang GT - 415bhp
GT - 600+bhp

Fiesta ST Plus is almost certain now too by the sound of it. That's got to be looking at 220-230bhp I would have thought. And who says Mountune won't offer a sneaky upgrade for the Focus RS? There's already talk of an upgraded one from Ford themselves to match the Golf R 400 that might be coming. 400bhp Focus with a warranty anyone?

Shall I not mention the fact they undercut all their rivals on price too?

For a company that has "lost the plot" I think they sound like they're doing ok...

I'll hold my hand up to that.

I think the main thing is that the new Focus RS doesn't look aggressive like the mk2, I think any one of us driving the new one would love it but it just doen't look like like a beast. I think that's one of the main dissapointments for most?

First impressons and all that?

But this was probably said in the eighties after the 3 door with the Saff on the horizon.

In time it will be loved.

I know two people in my local RS club who've sold their mk2's so they could order the new one. And they are very excited.

I reckon the Ford brand is probably doing well for itself right now, Ken Block has all the street cred to get young people with spare cash both sides of the Atlantic spending on ST's and RS's. Whilst M-sport give genuine WRC credability too.

i can't find the article that states that the fiesta st is possibly the best car in the world right now but i'm still looking for it, driving a diseasal fiesta mk7 around on a daily basis i can see where they are ocming from though, it's a great little car, if it was quicker i'd be looking to buy one in a heartbeat, handling is brilliant and the effortless way it can tackle most road conditions is amazing

the sort of person who wants a fast sporty car nowadays is a businessman type, so no loud shouty spoilers, it's a more descreet look they are going for, it leads to more upmarket buyers with more money to spend and therefore more sales

business talk though isn't a concern to folks who want flames popping out of the exhaust and the looks of an alien spaceship

back to case in point its a shit advert and if the rs was released at same time as the st there would be no issue and ford usa stated it was developed with the us in mind 1st due to success of the st, and it still has too many doors

Not denying that the ad is shit. Aren't most ads though?

So the MK2 Focus RS was shit because the ST came out sooner? Or the MK1 Escort RS2000 was shit because the Mexico came out sooner? Not sure I get that logic

The RS has been developed with a wider market in mind. Isn't that just good business sense though? The US market is moving more and more towards hatchbacks and "European-style" cars, why on earth wouldn't Ford want to get in on that action? They're a business looking to make money, not please a load of anoraks in the UK who can't get over a 30 year old Sierra People bum Saphs and they have four doors?

I think the argument is irrelevant anyway to be honest. The car is widely being touted as the best in its class already, it's got way more tech in it than anything the Germans have to offer, yet is cheaper than the lot of them. It may not look as wild as the last RS (everyone seems to forget how relatively understated the MK1 RS was don't they?), but it looks wilder than the Golf R or RS3. Most people don't want an idiotic spoiler these days and people are queuing out of the door of Ford dealers to buy one.

Job done I'd say.

Ford are still in debt so imo its good that they can sell the same car all over the world cause its cutting costs.

I wonder years ago when 3dr cossie owners knew the saff was coming out, i wonder if they moaned about the extra doors.

Ford cater for the world market now. The American's only get their Fiesta ST in 4dr ffs, and the 1.0 ecoboost comes in basic spec. Most car manufacturers that sell cars to UK buyers are no more than car rental business these days anyway.

Absolutely with you on this. The RS is no more an ST in drag than any RS or Cosworth is of their cooking spec siblings. Albeit with less/more plastic bolted on depending which car you go for.

I absolutely love the older stuff. Particularly 80's Fords. You get a great sense of occasion when you drive them, but when you think a 1.0 fiesta is the same pace as a Lotus Cortina and the way even bogo models handle now it's clear things have moved on!

I think the new Focus RS is going to be an awesome bit of kit and I will be looking to get myself one when I'm in a position to do so. If they ever get released that is!

I think the fact that the new RS is a 5 door is a good thing as it'll appeal to the person that wants a performance car but also wants the practicality of a family hatch. I also like the fact that it isn't as shouty in looks as the mk2 is, I always thought the mk2 looked a bit 'Halfords'!

People seem to forget that times have changed and things have moved on quite a lot from the Cossie days.

As for the new stuff not being that much better perforformance wise than the old stuff, get real! Lol! Put a standard Cossie round a track against a standard RS, or even my Focus ST diesel and the Cossie will have it's arse handed to it on a plate.

Don't think I hate the old stuff because I don't, I may have thought the same as the others about modern stuff in the past but owning a new ST, I can appreciate the modern day performance car. There's no wondering if you're going to reach your destination or not as you would in an old Cossie!

All my own opinion of course

You are right in that you cant compare a 1990 2wd ( mine ) to a new Focus RS, the Focus will be smooth, fast and easy to drive as its what people expect but will it have the special appeal of a well sorted Saff? As I have said before I took the old model Focus RS for a test drive and when we came back to the Ford dealership all the mechanics and some of the other staff were outside looking at my Saff and wanted to know all about it and see the engine bay etc. I have had mine for more than 21 years and have never been anywhere in it where I was worrying about it breaking down.It has passed every MOT and if looked after they are as reliable as any other car.Its old technology now but when its 450 bhp comes on song there are still very few cars that can match its performance.
I have no doubt the new Focus RS will be a great success and at over Ł30,000 it needs to be.

Ford have done a cracking job in making the new Focus RS imo.

Such a lot of shit being spouted in this thread, thank God for massivewangers and a couple of others getting things back in to perspective. Yes advert is shit, yes mk3 RS Focus has too many doors but it's still giving more expensive cars a good run for their money in the recent reviews and you lot think Ford is going backwards - oh dear.

As for the new stuff not being that much better perforformance wise than the old stuff, get real! Lol! Put a standard Cossie round a track against a standard RS, or even my Focus ST diesel and the Cossie will have it's arse handed to it on a plate.
we've got 2 fiesta diseasals to run around in, and the way these things handle, it's like they are glued to the road, i've yet to come across any other car that's kept up with it around the corners, or roundabouts, and at 50 mph in 3rd it's still quieter than even my mk6

Agreed advert is shite, mk3 frs is turning into a bit of a marmite car. Those who want it to have wings and less doors hate it while those accepting evolution (along with those who have actually had a chance to drive the thing) love it.. There is a place in my heart for the new technology whilst still loving crusty old saffs

The advert maybe shit, but its having the desired effect as people such as us are talking about it which means Ford are getting publicity, and if people are talking about a brand then there is more chance it will generate sales. Thats the whole point of an advert - to make people notice it and talk about it. People then become inquisitive and when passing a dealership may just think 'I'll pop in there just to see what its all about', and before you know it they've bought a car!

my mk4.5 handles very well on a good road surface, but crashes about a fair bit when the road is a bit crap, but it does run on 195/45/16's

my mk6.5 handles much better and a lot smoother across every road surface and runs 195/50/15's

but the mk7 is running on the same size and the handling is even better than the difference between the other 2 in terms of just how planted the car feels in any road conditions or surfaces, wet or dry

plus the gearing means that it's much quicker then either of mine in real terms

it's the perfect car, i can only imagine what it's like with twice the power
