Default Subaru Impreza Reverse problem.

Anyone with a Subaru Impreza WRX STI with the 6 speed gearbox had a problem with reverse gear? My Sons will not go into reverse now, Checked the cable that operates the small lever, nothing wrong with that. Nothing else in the linkages is faulty so its in the gearbox itself. Reverse gear selector fork or synchro ring maybe?
Cheapest gearbox from a breaker is about £1400 so hoping some new parts will be a better bet.

Doubt it's anything serious tbh it's one hell of a strong gearbox, I've never heard of them breaking the reverse setup so you 100% sure the cable is operating ok I.e lifting fully?

its common mate, caused by putting it into reverse when still rolling, the hub and ring wear

The reverse blocker lever should be in the 6 o clock position with the gear knob pulled up.
If it is the hub/syncro ring, it should be much cheaper (than an unknown box from a breaker) to get them replaced as these gearboxes are quite easy to take apart and rebuild.

What age is the car?

The cable is all as it should be so have eliminated that as the cause .

Its a 2001 model but has had a 6 speed box and clutch and flywheel fitted. All other gears are fine so hopefully its only reverse syncro ring gone. Box is coming out so can find out exactly what the problem is.
We have modified it to 362BHP but I cant see how that can affect reverse gear?

Unless you regularly launch the car in reverse, the power shouldn't be a problem.
Has the reverse gear change quality gradually deteriorated, as it would be unusual to suddenly just fail?
Does it feel like the gear knob is going far enough across the gate for reverse gear and it is just wont engage the syncro, or is the gear knob not going far enough to the right to even try and select reverse?

It has been playing up to get it into reverse for a couple of weeks my Son tells me. All the linkages etc all seem normal as well as the cable part so it is a fault inside the gearbox itself.Hopefully not too much to fix?

Could be clutch on its last legs, had a few cars that don't like reverse when the clutch is on its way out.

Scoobies are notorious for sometimes being a bit of a pain to get in reverse, usually have to pump the pedal on mine if cold.

I had a gearbox issue a year or so ago, had to get it rebuilt (along with the transfer box that got damaged too) and it was less than a grand all in.

Recently had a new clutch and new flywheel so that is all good.
