Default Cars are cheap

Back in 1998 I had a brand new Escort GTi which cost £19,860. In today's money that's about £32k (http://www.measuringworth.com/)

Think about could I get today for £32k, in terms of build, performance and economy, have we ever had it so good?

That's very true! Also it amazes me how cheap u can get a useable used car for. I used to buy perfectly useable cars up untill we got our new car this year for £200 and they'd last a year or more used everyday. Though to be fair back in the 90s I was picking up mk3 xr3is for between £50 in rough condition to £250 minters lol.

I totally agree, my sister paid £6500 for her brand new Ford Fiesta Mk3 Popular Plus in 1989, she still has it! and in 2008 my Mum got a Peugeot 107 new for less than my sister paid and the 107 has airbags, power steering, CD player, leccy windows, remote locking, ABS, etc etc.

When I thought about it I was amazed how they do it, OK we got good discount, but sure the car makers/dealers still making a profit.

What about electrical goods too?

I bought a 28" Sony CRT TV (that's the big heavy ones to the youngsters lol) once, must have been circa 17 years ago. Cost me £1100! Almost gave me a hernia getting it through the door. Interestingly brought home from Comet in the back seat of my Saphire Cosworth

You can get a 32" Panasonic viera LED TV for £199 these days.

Can you imagine waking round comet back then looking at CRT TV's for £1100 and having a glimpse of the future sat there.. A 48" Samsung smart TV with almost edge to edge display and almost as thin as a picture frame for £499. Would have been a bit of a head fu&k! Then again, might not have made the best of it back then with the old VHS lol.

Slight tangent I know.

I don't know if it compares really, a mini cooper S in 1970 was £962, a mini cooper S today is 20K, but the original mini is probably more comparable to something like a fiat Panda which is 10K.

I guess that peoples perception of what a car should be has changed so dramatically. Also the number of manufacturers of affordable cars has increased dramatically as have their production. Cars were originally hugely labour intensive to produce compared with modern manufacturing.

In 1988 a cosworth was £19500 according to measuring worth thats nowover £40K! But thats not dramatically off the mark in my eyes as in 88 a cosworth was probably the equivalent to an M3 today..... which is £40k

Interesting topic.

I can tell you how they do it Nissan they produce a car every 58 seconds. Cost them under 1k to produce use lean manufacturing the list goes on.

I was thinking this thread was expertly timed for the RS release! Mine spec came in a bit more at £33k which included lux, cs seats, forged wheels, sync2, painted calipers and nitrous blue paint

i'll take the new mustang v8 manual rear drive £36k , but if i buy the same car in america LHD its only £21500, how does that work, and the US one has the better recaro interior, i wonder if they can supply in RHD for that price

Had to take my discovery into the dealers yesterday, just having a look around, new rangerover 105k just imagine the depreciation on that, new rangerover sport 83k, new discovery sport looking thing 43k and ugly as fuck, I get a newer discovery every now and then but only after someone else has took the hit on it.
