Default Mk4 xr3i starter motor change

Hi
Just recently solved a cold start problem I have been having on my recently bought xr3i and now I've been taking it for a run I have noticed it is a bit lumpy when starting it hot. I reckon this is the typical starter motor problem with the starter being so close to the exhaust, so I think its just best to change it for a shiny new one with a heat shield.

Now the question is would I be best to replace it with an xr3i one or a diesel one from a newer model?

I have been told a starter off a transit connect is a straight fit and it better at coping with heat and I've read that an escort mk5 mk5 diesel is also a straight swap and is faster at spinning or something along those lines..... However I have just read a thread where someone has used a focus zetec one and it fried itself after being stuck on for too long so as u can imagine I don't want to make that expensive mistake! Especially as I will be buying a brand new one!

Any help is much appreciated!

Starter motors don't cause "lumpiness"

Maybe lumpiness isn't the best way to describe it, its just reluctant to start when hot. Its almost the same problem I had when cold starting but that turned out to be a vacuum leak.

Also been reading a thread on here about this problem and it could be the fuel pump. What does anyone suggest I try first? Pump or starter?
