Hi all. Just registered as a newbie on this site and require some wiring help/advice please. I am in the process of converting my Mk1 Escort from a standard 2 clock dashboard to a 6 dial. I'm having huge problems with the wiring. I cannot get the rev clock to work at all. I have been told that there should be 2 spare wires in the original loom with bullet connectors to connect to the rev clock, I can't find any.(I'm suspect it's because the loom is obviously for a 2 clock not a 6!!) I was then told to run the negative wire off the coil to the wires on the back of the rev clock, that hasn't worked. (and neither did connecting the positive wire instead) The second problem is that I wanted to fit a separate oil warning lamp to the dashboard as the 6 dial doesn't have one fitted. I've run a wire from the oil warning switch to an l.e.d. lamp which wouldn't light up. I then connected the lamp wire directly to the loom plug and it lights up when the ignition is switched on but does not go out at all. I've connected the old 2 clock dash back up and the light works on this as normal but the l.e.d. light just stays on. Any help in plain terms would be most appreciated as the only option at this moment is to reinstate the original clocks but I've hacked the dash to death. DOH!!!

 

Mk1 tacho is an inductive pickup, which is different to normal tacho's, that's why running the extra wire from the coil failed to work.

On the tacho you should have a white wire with male/female bullet connectors ?

It is right all Mk1's, 2 or 4 dial, i've seen, have had matching connectors in the main loom. Could be taped in or tucked away out of sight.

Now if you can't find the connectors you can make it work. You will need to find the wire that runs from the ignition switch to the ballast resistor. This wire is then cut and the tacho white wire inserted in series at the cut.

 

Cheers John. Other than cutting and stripping back the insulation on the loom I couldn't find these elusive bullet connectors but I'll try and have another look for them. Where might I find the ballast resistor??? No idea what one is sorry. Just the problem of the oil lamp to solve now.

 

The mk2's have a pink resistance wire within in the loom. Don't remember if the mk1 is the same or has a white resistance block next to the coil.

 

John. Been trying to find any spare wires in the loom without any success at all, stripped it right back but couldn't find anything. Don't know what a ballast resistor even looks like so I'm at a loss as to where I go next. The new oil light is still staying on so I'll either just have to get an auto electrician to look at it or get a welder out to plate up the dash and fix the old 2 clock dash back in which didn't give me any trouble or stress at all,which ever is the cheapest option.

 

An auto sparks that knows mk1's will have it licked in no time. Take less time than welding up the dash and making good.

 

John or anyone else on this site, could you post a picture of a ballast resistor or point me in the right direction as to where I might find it. Have been told there might not be a resistor fitted but a resistor wire instead. Thanks in advance, Jim.

John. Thanks for all your advice about my wiring problems. My brother has spent all day tracing the wires in the loom to try and locate that elusive ballast resistor!! Couldn't find it as there isn't one fitted but managed to find a pink wire and used that to power the rev clock. Oil light problem was traced to a faulty wire picking up power (6-8 volts) which was enough to keep powering up the led light. Thanks for all your assistance during this very stressful time. Good to hear you got it sorted. That pink wire is the ballast resistor.
