People Restoring Cars, BRAKE PIPES.......!
i guess this is a bit of a rant, or a discussion?!
it is car related so its in the right section, hopefully otherwise i will get tag team dry bum r@ped for posting in the wrong section
if i have i am VERY VERY SORRY MR & MRS/MS/MISS Mods
Right, people restoring cars usually do an AMAZING job, seriously you get much respect and ego massaging for what you take on and achive, GENUINLY!
Painted undersides, powder coated suspension, zinc coated or painted bolts, attention to the finest details!
you post pictures of your 1,2,3,4,5+ year labour of love restoration of your pride and joy,
we all LOVE them, massaging your ego and sucking eachothers willys,
"mate a credit to you"
"you must love this car more than your missus"
"blah blah"
then i look at the brake pipes, and it looks like you left them on the nearest dual carriageway for a week, then bent them just enough so the fittings mated together
heres a few instances of amazing ego rubbing restoration achievements that, "well, quite clearly....... *pause*.........*spectacles twitch and are moved down his nose* i should think i would not have done that" (my gaffers favourite group of words before he flames you to death for something you have done he doesnt like PMSL :P )
this one is a good effort, but should have a bit more effort in the way it come out of the flexi and gets bent to clear the wishbone, please, out the flexi, 45degree bend down then 90degree bend, then follow the line of the wishbone, then another SLIGHT bend at the metal retaining tab (cant see the rest of the poorness in this pic LOL :P )
intention was there i guess........maby?! still a VERY poor effort!!
Front to Rear brake pipes.........
please dont just throw them on the car, PLEASE........
this is what i do on EVERY car i make/replace pipes on!
only changed both rears as the slaves were leaking and the unions would not break free (i HATE changing brake pipes, CV boots and removing/refitting road wheels more than any other work on cars!)
anyway, this was on a SHYTE Berlingo van thats not worth a wank.....
not perfect by any stretch but "acceptable" brake pipes in my book, if it was my vehicle i would have perfected the angles to/from the bends
(these were bent using the brake pipe flaring tool, the Vice it was mounted in and a 1/2inch drive extension, by hand, and a big pinch of Pride, it (they, i did both sides but i fucked my pictures up so only got 1 side, see.. human imperfection while on my Trolling high opinionated horse )
what are my fellow PF viewers / posters opinions on this?

On your last pic its showing the brake pipe close to the shocker and also once you put the wheel back on and put the car back on the ground the arm will move up causing the pipe to bend and eventually snap. Might just be the way i am looking at the pic but that's the way it looks to me

Well, *clears throat for high horse comment*
having glanced over your reply , which i respectively agree with in regards to both my correct use of grammar and my use of nouns,
my spelling, use of context and spelling ability therefore both could, and should have been executed in a much more professional and educated manner
please accept my common, peasant level intelligence, gracious and most humble apologies
and if i ever show signs of similar insolence, or my blatant use of mis-educated hap hazard comments, then please have me severely reprimanded in whatever fashion you feel that you see fit!
Again, my DEEPEST peasant apologies.....

everything in the picture is fixed in position except the rubber flexi hose that the metal brake pipe mates into

BigJohn, my sarcasm should NEVER be taken seriously
and the brakepipe were routed like that from the factory, i only made a like for like replacement
RS1,
seriously buddy, this is my single most pet hate on cars, shitty brake pipes! spend a bit of time and make them look a bit better
Im not one for criticizing wheel choice or underbody suspension / drivetrain colour choice, but seriously, either take pride in the brake pipe hard lines, OR............ and heres a fuckin awesome idea........ -4 braided stainless lines from master cylinder/ABS distribution unit to brake caliper/drum brake assembly (slave cylinder operated drum brake assembly)

good effort, but again i personally would have made more of a bend/angular change from the flexi, down to the pressed join on the wishbone........
and more of , sorry, i would have made an effort to follow the origional brake pipe lines, followed the wishbone lines and made the loop a lot more tighter, but thats just my very very sad, OCD opinion.
i see you are in Heartfordshire, id be more than happy to come and try to sort a very nice looking brake pipe hard line assembley.
Ping me a PM if you could/might want my help
sure we have spoke loads of bollocks on PF but never actually met up!
needing attention i guess.........Sean PMSL

I prefer driving my 450 bhp Saff and using my Hi-Spec big brakes which work extremely well even though the brake pipes are probably nowhere near your standard.

I think they turned out ok considering I had no old pipes to work from though
I did the rest of the brake lines in steel braided hose though as I think it looks neater!
Yeah I think we've spoke a few times, you going to Ford Fair? Be good to put a face to the name!

PassionFord Post Whore!!
Funny thread.
It's bloody hard to replicate the exact bends of a solid line, well in the time you can spend on it working a dealership imo. If it's your own project you can spend as long as you want getting them 'just so'
If there are some tips to be had I'd be interested in learning.
How do you get perfect right angled bends without kinking the pipe?
Edit - ahh, just read this bit.
Check out the cage work on this chap's E36, looks trick.
His brake pipes look crap as mine would do too!
I once made all the lines on a mates Tiger kit car, a lot of them 'on show' , not hidden under the car, they looked ok, but I did spend fkin ages pissing around getting them 'right'

I'm glad you've not seen mine, not the worst I've seen and not as good as I would like, but the best I could do (first time) but in all honesty they are shite.
