Never had one personally but my brother in law has just traded his 55 plate i think, in for a focus st. He had it 5 years and the only problem was he had to put a new gearbox in it after the original went bang in spectacular fashion pulling away in first a few years ago. Had a massive hole in it. Other than that was really reliable and he used to cane it.
The misses has hers a couple of years, only two issue, one being the folding mirror motor going and so clicks about 3 or 4 times when they fold in and the other being the mechanism/wire to put the seat forward to get in the back seizing both common issues and both sorted under warranty at the time.
They are a bit heavy on juice for the amount of power you are getting but not horrific.
In general they seem to be a very reliable car with few issues noted. I think if you get a looked after one you wont have to touch it.
Also worth considering the MK6.5 ZS, will be a bit cheaper to run and dare say they is little between them in performance day to day, if anything the ST felt like it should have had more grunt to justify the fuel, and also seems to be as reliable.

My ex missus uses her one on a daily to work and its a lovely thing to drive, reliable etc. I'll msg you on FB as i'll probably get an infraction for saying something I shouldnt!!!!
I've got the 1.6 zetec s one, it is a bit slow on motorways but fine around town. Perfect little cars, cheap to insure and tax, not had one single fault on it in 3 years. Only thing which is bit rubbish is lots of people have had bits stolen off them. The centre caps, front rear bumpers and skirts literally just unclip off them
Great little cars. I ran mine for two years before pulling it off the road and chucking an evo lump in it.
One thing to watch out for is the stock diff - they have a tendency to explode with no warning, but replacement gearboxes are cheap and plentiful and they're very easy to work on.

Probably because the s is on 16 inch rims. I would give the zetec s ago, the wife has had hers for 7 years. only parts it's needed is a coil pack 2 front springs due to one snapping a wheel bearing and a new thermostat housing. About £250 in replacement parts, gets about 38 mile to the gallon. they are a bit high up in the rev range on the motorway due to the close ratio box though.
