EsCos not starting - any idea why?
Hi,
I went to start my EsCos tonight. As usual de-armed the alarm & immobiliser and fuel pump started to run. Cranked over and over and over but it doesn't fire? I've definitely got fuel pressure as it is showing the normal level on the gauge. I've taken out the plugs and given them a clean, but it still doesn't fire.
I haven't touched anything on the car since the last time it was out and running. Any ideas what the problem could be?
It's also worth mentioning that when I switched the ignition on for another time without even cranking the car over, it made what can only be described as the biggest bang I have ever heard - similar to a shotgun going off
. Rog can vouch for just how loud it was.
Any idea what caused that too?
Cheers,
Agar

It was a rather loud bang!I'm not sure what to say about the starting issue, I don't know anything about how the wasted spark kits work, I suspect it possibly has no spark but I'm not sure what cause that, obviously I'd normally start at the crank sensor/distributor area but in your case thats not entirely applicable. Perhaps a call to MSD may help speed things along to get some info on where to look?
We can try and bang in some new plugs but I'm not overly conviced thats the problem, and I'm totally confused why the hell your car backfired whithout cranking it over, there must have been fuel in the engine, and obviously a spark when you turn on the ignition but I have never seen that before.....

No idea, I would've thought that you would only have spark when you physically crank the car over, in our case we tried to start it, it wouldn't go, then waited a while.
The next time we tried, we turned the key to the ignition to postion 1, and it backfired straight away.....

The ignition switch could be worn or sticking so its making a contact. I had this on a car years ago, also my mates C20let nova had similar. it had jumped a tooth and was back firing when cranking and a chewed silicone hose by a family of mice didnt help as the hose was controlling mixture or something IRRC
other than than no idea
Hope you sort it, im sure the cosworth guys will know

The 'backfire' when the ignition was switched on is quite a common problem, with WS it seems.
I think a 'SPOUT' must get sent when the ignition is switched on with WS, hence the backfire as the fuel obviously enters when at this point as well.
As to the actual issue have you checked for spark? (you obviously have ignition to a degree, hence the backfire

Thanks, glad to know the backfire was not likely a product of some sinister fault.
We do need to check for spark properly, so far we have just assumed that it is not sparking since it is getting fuel, so that would be the likely suspect, will have another look at it and hopefully make some headway with it later.
Most of our earlier time last night was trying to find and fix a water leak so we ran out of time to look further into the starting problem.
