does anyone use a st170 as a daily
im gonna look at one tomorrow to use as my runaround and im wondering what they are like to live with mpg wise and if the is anything that goes wrong on them, i read the clutch is expensive if its on its way out and a flat spot in the rev range and if it struggles to get up the revs theres a fuel pump problem which is expensive to fix aswell. really fancy one so cheers for any advice fellas
i had one as a daily since new in 05. done 43k now imperial blue and only ever changed lambda once. iv never had economical cars so its just been normal economy to me.
but iv had a few of the common probs with them on my track car im building. mainly fuel pump issues. new pump at fords is 300+. dont bother second hand cos i bought one and it was worse than what i had. iv had a nightmare making an uprated pump fit but think iv got it sussed. cost £55 but if i had my time over i would buy a sytec pump from demon tweeks for 105. i think its a direct fit.
read my project thread if you want more info on pump.

my old one drank fuel like it was going out of fashion! problems i had were engine managment light kept coming on, steering rack needed refurbing after 50k miles and the dash lights kept flickering :-(

I've had one and my advice is don't bother. The VVT and Inlet runner control can be troublesome, clutches are expensive. They really are not very quick, a friend had a remapped tdci focus and that could easily keep up with it. They are very thirsty for what they are too (my 300bhp ST is more economical). On the plus side they look nice, quite comfy and good fun in the bends.
If it were me I would get a tdci sport, if it has done 80k+ make sure you have a receipt for a clutch / flywheel, get it remapped and enjoy similar looks, performance and also get a bit better reliability and 500+ miles to a tank!

hmmm makes me think about just keeping the puma as its running spot on, just £600 to sort the rust is a lot, my first focus was only a 1.4 and that was poor on juice for what it was 320 miles a tank but i did made it look good
keep the puma and forget the 170 as its really a st150 anyway and none are 170 without work being done, high insurance and tax and shit fuel consumption, so unless you can afford it forget it

I've got one on an '03 plate with just over 78k on it and I love it to bits.
They are nippy if you drive them right (hard!!
) and they do handle very well.
Only downside to mine is the clutch is a bit worn, it's not slipping yet but the biting point is high so I'll have to do it some point but I'm just being gentle with it at the moment!
As said they are crap on fuel but fuel economy doesn't bother me one bit.
I paid £1300 for mine and it is a really tidy little car! Just a couple of little bits of bodywork to get done!

My bros got one as his everyday car but parked it up now had nothing but trouble with, clutch and DMF, lambda sensors intake runner ecu etc! As said by others they drive nice but drink fuel and there's not really any real performance there I have a standard MK5 RS2000 with 109k on it as a trackday car and it was quicker than the ST lol
I bought one, poorly maintained, minimal service history on 110k , changed the cambelt and waterpump, plugs all fluids and filters and got 9000 miles out of it and in that time it only cost me a clutch pedal cylinder and 2 tyres. That was used as a daily did 20 mile round trip each day to work in it and visited family one day a weekend 30 mile round trip £35 a week in juice wernt too bad. still going now my cousins got it, top end is a little rattly now.
edit.. the inlet runner cable thing broke on mine when i got it (common fault) I unplugged the control box on the bulkhead and took the engine managment bulb light out. ran faultless since.

this was my old focus, and if i cant get a good price im gonns get a mk2 and put the st kit on it

Crap on fuel
Not overly fast
Handle well
Troublesome bits - IMRC box, clutch/DMF, tyres, clutch cylinder leaking down pedal, lambdas.
Pretty much what everyone else said tbh, much better cars for the money for a daily.

I had one as daily for 2 years bought it with 38k sold it with 54k had climate pack(extra comfy) blufin,ss exhaust, k&n, eibch springs and roll bars(lift off oversteer
)
great for back road blasts and not any heavier on fuel than me old vectra gsi

Also I've just bought a 170.. 04 plate.. Don't think it's ever been passed the 5k rev range.. Fuel pump is a little sticky too when low on fuel.. Would a swirl pot solve that problem...? And as for the imrc switchover I think the flaps may be sticking open.. Is this an easy fix..?

Iv had mine for about 20months now £1995 2002 95k, now 102k and its been great as a daily and good fun to drive.
Fuel can be thirsty in high revs but if you take it easy you can get 30-35mpg.
First 12months didnt spend a penny on it which at the time the car was cheap so I thought id be coming across problems but its been fine.
Recently iv replaced discs and pads, track rod end, exhaust flexi and 2front springs so nothibg major.
Driving in low revs its just like any other car, refined comfy and smooth then keeping it up high in the rev range and its pretty quick, holds well in the bends and will even treat you to abit of lift of oversteer if you hammer it.
The car isnt as fast as rivals but doesnt mean its slow unless you drive it correctly, as said its strongest point is holding its speed through the bends.
Iv had 140mph on the flat (private track) which is probably 135mph if you sat nav it being the cars stated top speed.
From many peoples opinions on them there are good and bad ones so test driving is highley recommended so if you do try on get it up to 7200rpm and see how it feels.
