Hi folks,I'd really appreciate some help/advice.
We have a 2004 Ford Fiesta that keeps cutting out first thing in the morning and when slowing down at lights/junctions etc.
All research points to a faulty idle speed control valve but I've been told by a mechanic that these don't have an idle control valve but rather an air flow sensor or something that is at least £300?
When the car is heated up it doesn't cut out as much but it's really bad for the first 20 minutes or so and seems to be getting worse.
Could anyone tell me if these models do in fact have a idle speed control valve?Any help/advice is much appreciated.Thank you.

I would put money on it and say that it does have a ISCV, it's only the more modern ones that use "fly by wire" technology, and so idle control is obtained via this.

You can try removing it and inspecting it, it may be "gummed" up with carbon.

It's just a case of looking near the inlet manifold, which will be plastic on your car!

You will see a cylindrical object with two bolts and an electrical connector, this is the valve.

I am pretty certain they don't have one as all mk6 fiestas have an electronic throttle pedal and no cable.

It is reasonably common on these engines for splits in vaccuum and breather hoses, so I would be checking all hoses for damage, they could even be collapsing under vacuum which would cause problems you are describing.

Richie you were right they don't have an idle control valve.It's incorporated into the electronic throttle control.All pipes etc were checked and are in good condition with no cracks etc so it's looking like a new electronic throttle control unit?I've been told a new one from Ford will cost £300 and that is with a discount apparently.Nightmare!

 

I was surprised to find out all Mk6 have the electronic throttle body, it may be worth verifying the signal first to see if it's giving the correct reflection of the throttle position.

Could you explain what you mean by this please?I have no knowledge of cars at all!My mechanic pal(although it's trucks he works with)checked the pipes etc for splits.
He seems to think there is nothing else it could be?Would the full ECU have to be replaced?Thanks for your help!

 

Take it to a garage / dealer that can read live data from the ECU. It will probably cost you an hours labour but will stop the head scratching and will pin point the fault rather than replacing parts willy nilly hoping that it will sort it. The throttle pedals are also known to fail so this could be looked into.
