Default Fuel gauge stopped working

Hi my fuel gauge recently stopped working suddenly while I was driving the other day. I dropped the tank down and disconnected the plug and tested the wires before doing anything else but I couldn't get anything from the wires, tester said none were earthed or live. Is there a fuse for the gauge? Anyone got any ideas where to start looking for the problem?

Cheers Billy

The supply goes via the gauge, it does not have a dedicated feed, perhaps there is a bad track on the PCB on the cluster, perhaps?

Would 3dr clocks work in a saff? My cousin has a set of dials out a 3dr I could try. My rev counter is very temperamental and stops working occasionally so the clocks may be the problem. I wasn't sure about the wires on the tank

saphs and 3dr's have different clocks, as i had the same problem, petrol gauge stopped working so changed the sender and it still didn't work, so changed the clocks and it worked fine.

i had a spare set of clocks from a mk1 sierra but they have a different plug on the back

cheers Matthew

I have also had this happen and it turned out to be a bad connection in a small 5 or 6 pin plug in the boot under a flap of carpet between the tail lights. I believe the fuel pump feed also goes through this plug along with 3 wires from the fuel sender unit for earth, fuel gauge feed and fuel light feed to the aux warning module. I removed the plug and soldered the wires directly.

Just tried changing the cluster for another item and still no reading from the fuel gauge. Don't know if its related but also noticed my number plate lights aren't working.

Also when I turn the ignition on the fuel warning light flashes. I presume this means there is no signal coming from the tank?

I suspect there is a break or bad connection in the wiring, you should have power at the wire at the sender WITH the ignition on, have you tried grounding this wire directly from the back of the cluster? The gauge should then read maximum, if this happens then you have a break in the wiring.

Yes the auxillary warning system flashes, if there is an open circuit, it will do this for around 10+ seconds.

Number plate lighting circuit is on same circuit as the panel lights, so if you have lost these as well you have a problem with this circuit, otherwise it may just be both bulbs have blown, we can easily test them.

Marty do you know which wire goes to the cluster from the tank? There is a 3 pin plug and a earth on the tank. When we tested them before none were earthed or live with the ignition on

Via your rev counter problems

Is yours a 4x4 or 2wd

The multi 3 plugs loom under the bulk header a squirt of of wd40 may be a quick fix worth a try

Fixed mine the multi plug closest the the battery

I just found a plug on back panel disconnected so I plugged it back an and my number plate lights work I then traced the wires from the fuel sender back to then realise they go to the same plug as the number plate lights lol turned the key and hey presto the fuel gauge works!
