Default Diesel towing car ?

The old man has a very nice X 2001 Volvo V70 2.4T estate in red with all the toys , owe yes he is 71 lol , they tow a caravan all over europe still and the car is ideal for this its solid , well planted got enough power except for one this 22mpg ......

Im trying to get him to go diesel with ether Audi , Bmw , Volvo ect ect , will have 6-8k to spend. Also it must have the build quality of the V70 ie tank !!!

Does anyone have a diesel estate worth considering , not interested in fords , vauxhall or french crap... nor any 4x4

Would be nice to see 35 mpg ???

Anyone ?

I'd go passat tdi, or even the d5 version of dads car as their awesome vehicles too.
A6 seem a bit cheaper as their bigger but essentially the same motors.
The 2.5 tdi is much more juicy than the 1.9 but will still hold up 30+ mpg,but either a 130 pd or remap will keep the passat/a4/a6 motoring just fine.

I've got a 530d touring. Self levelling rear suspension makes it such a great tow car.

35mpg towing my track car too.

VW Passat 1.9 TDi PD130 - towed my dolly and MK4 Escort all the way from Dorset to London and averaged 38MPG as I wasn't hanging around much either.

Have used it to tow a two berth caravan (have a compass lynx) without any issues what so ever.

If you're going to go for a passat, make sure you get the PD engine type.

E class merc estate, they built like a tank, 320cdi give good mileage, more space inside than the bmw, and for that money u would get a lot of car.

Needs to be big as the caravan is not small plus it get filled when they go to europe so being heavier than the caravan is important , BMW great but there shit on the slippery stuff thou a friend has a breatheed on 2008 530 d christ its quick , ive got the Passat PD130 its great thou no heavy enought , might be volvo again then eaither in 165 or 185 hp form .....

After killing my trusty old passat estate tdi I've just bought the below. I needed a heavy tower and as it will be my daily smoker i needed reasonable mpg too this wipes out every 4x4/ pick up.
I've moved a couple of cars with it this week on my twin axle trailer and its been awesome lol made up with it. Will be giving it a good run to brands hatch next week which is a 300 odd mile trip so will track mpg.
36 and I got a bloody volvo! But it's soooo comfy! Get your Dad to have a go in one. He'll love it, mine does and he's got a 2.0d xtype estate (and caravan!)

Not sure why you're dismissing Fords.

I'm on my second Mondy estate (2008) and it's spot on. The wifes Smax has dragged my Cossie all over the place at 42mpg too.

nice motors, look after that gearbox tho, ensure the gearbox oil is changed and make sure you only use the Volvo oil for it, its box specific
