Ok, after years and years of wanting a cossie estate I'm going to build one (unless someone can find one for sale ).

I know it's been done a few times, and I've searched on here using the awesome search feature but it's not working. So, who can help me?

Basicallly I plan to make a RWD saph cossie estate, so what do I need apart from the estate and the engine/box from a cossie? I'm presuming most of the wiring is similar, but for now I'd like to focus on the mechanical side of things. I seem to recall "issues" with the rear suspension arms or something along those lines, and would the prop be the same, what about the diff and so on?

As for the front, what about the crossmember/hubs/rack etc, i was planning on leaving all the original estate stuff in there, is that possible? I realise it may be easier to buy two complete cars, but if it is not 100% necessary then there is little point.

 

Foreignrs had one when he lived abroad I think. Built it when he stacked his saph at the ring.

rog i would think bolting the whole front end from the cossie would be the way forward,for handling and braking etc

 

Yup i was thinking that, the cossie brakes would likely not fit the the standard hubs.

I was reading about the rear setup, there will be issues with the trailing arms if I want cossie stuff but I think i can get away with just putting in the cossie diff and leave the rest the same, will have some work to do there I think, need to look into it a bit more and see what brakes i can fit to it.

 

There quite a few estates with turbo technics twin turbo v6 in them which run decent power. might be able find out some info about brakes and suspension on the xroc website as couple lads have estates on there.

I'd always wanted one and i'd known of a local car for years that I wanted to do it with,, when I finally got hold of it though, it was too good a car and would have been sacrilage to convert so I sold it on...

An old, gutless, fuel thirsty estate car, regardless of how clean, isnt very desirable. At least as a cossie conversion it'd have had a bit of an appeal as a fun sleeper.

 

I'm pretty sure your need a ghia or v6 estate because of the electrics, rear disc brakes and tunnel to except the T5. Could be wrong.

The estate uses different trailing arms to a std sapph or sierra. The dampers go inside the springs.

 

The wiring makes no difference, as it's only the engine loom you will be interested in, Cosworth's are merely Ghia trim, it's not essential.

Yes the rear suspension on Estates is different, the shocks are "Concentric" but I am not sure if you can transfer over the conventional beam etc?

Also I am pretty sure the MK2 tunnels were all the same size, I seem to recall on the MK1 it can be an issue as only 1985 onward cars (IIRC) had the larger tunnel (Which would be when the Cosworth was conceived anyway)

Yes agree with the front, fit everything from a 2WD Cosworth, remember the cross member is unique as well!

go for a late model estate that has abs and all the extras

the rear suspension, the shocks go through the springs unlike a saf where the shock is behind

if you want to fit a cossie beam, i think you would have to modd the rear inner arches aswell as add suspension turrets do to different locations

everything else will fit straight in from front back, all holes are there for intercoolers already etc

wiring doesnt matter, its 6 wires to power a loom up, but on later models the plugs are in the same place as a saf so behind battery, use the main part of a cossie connector off car loom and wire it into the multi plugs of the estate loom, job done for loom.

plus with the later shells even in 2wd form, they have the tunel and notches in chassis legs for 4wd if you ever wanted to go that way

 

Fit the cossie beam and hubs/discs etc, but use the estate arms. Konis are available for estates iirc.

 

Dojj has a 2.9 twin turbod one, i think with top boss conversion???
Cossie bumpers, big brakes etc etc. Not been run up for a while.
Give him a shout he seems to know them inside out.

 

The estate was a great laugh back then ! If I'm right Andrew had to modify the rear ed as the estates are different

It's my dads, it's been off the rod for 2 years as it needs a weld on the chassis leg. It's a 2.0i 4x4 on a J plate.

I will ask the question as I know it's just sitting there and he hasn't got the time to get it back on the road.

 

this is mine and im going the same route. its a 2.0lt pinto efi and apart for the body work and a spax kit its standard,got a yb sitting in the garage, just need to collect all the other bits.

Yeah Sticky if you could find out mate and let me know, I'm bidding on one justnow on eBay, the idea is to keep the cost down so I'm looking for the right car at the right price as they won't be worth a whole lot complete unfortunalely. I would buy one today if I could find one!

i built a 4x4 yars ago,
even got 15 mondeo steel rims and trims on it, was i right laugh
had a t34 and greys, looked totaly standard
hardest part was modding te tunnel and front legs because i made it 4x4
but if your sticking with rwd then it'll all just bolt straight up(front end)
i just used the original car loom and patched in the cosworth engine loom
as for the back end, i got some coil overs made for the back to keep the original suspension
and the exhaust needed to be cut up and rewelded a bit to clear the differant suspension
but generaly realy easy to do
had it up crail couple times, used to run 12s passes, wasnt bad for a standard looking sierra estate,
should have kept it, was great fun

 

Rog surely you remember the silver cossie estate that used to go about aberdeen years ago, was an awesome car, im wanting a cossie p100, again done heaps of times but would love to build one

I nearly bought that years ago, went round for a test drive the guy wasnt in but his missus gave me the keys, obviously gave it a good drive got back to find the head chucking water out, body was in poor condition aswell, looked cool and drove fine.

I ended up buying an E36 convertible as another toy, plan is to keep that until spring and move on to another project, but lately I've been looking at E30 325's. It's difficult to get an estate in reasonable condition and a saph thats not totally buggered mechanically for reasonable money when I want to do it on a budget, after it's built thar car won't be worth a whole lot so i'm not going to go mad financing it.

i used to know sean through scroggy,that was a flyer back in the day and was really clean when sean had it,always wondered what happened to that car
