how do you diagnose if the turb's drinking oil or it's the rings?
it's a 1.4 fiesta tdci
we pulled the inlet pipework off and there was a small puddle of oil in the turbo, but there was no play, but there is a breather pipe just before there so it could be the rings and the oil in the turbo may just be as a reslut of that?
but
it doesn't smoke when it's cold on idle or when it's hot on idle
it only smokes, and it's noticable smoke, when you give it some beans when you are pulling away from a standing start or you give it some beans after it's been cruisng along, on part throttle there is no smoke at all
just after a diagnosis as he's probably going to sell the car if it's the engine but will probably keep it if its the turbo oil seal
and before the mods start getting twitching fingers, it's my brother in laws car in india so it's not a for sale ad disgused as a "my cars fucked someone buy it" post

Sounds more like rings IMO or maybe blocked breather setup... Clean your breather pipes etc. and do a comp test... Although I have no idea what the results should be on that engine!

what ever it is, we won't be finding out the cause until at least the 20th of the month as we've got a wedding to deal with before then
bbut i've mentiong the breather thing and i've also mentioned that it's morelikely to be turbo related
but more investigation shows that:
it smokes every so lightly at idle
it smokes shedloads on acceleration
there is no noticable smoke on lifting off
there is no noticable smoke on crusing at part throttle
does that sounds any more liekly to be one or the other then?

how do you do them on a diseasal though then?
don't want to have to remove injectors if they ain't gonna come out, plus indian mechanics aren't knows for their use of "normal" tools

I would say turbo any oil in air intake or exhaust side apart from oil supply/return means sudden death engine will blow spectacely see You Tube, turbo/engine blow.
you can also check turbo overhalls on there as well.

lolThicker oil will not get by the rings so easily, so I would still say rings mate.

he's only got to survive for another 3 months or so and then he can flog it on so if it's rings and he's still driving it and it's not a plume of smoke out the back he's going to simply keep topping it up with oil and be done
i would have thought you could take an inlet pipe off post turbo, if its full of oil then its more likely to be the turbo pumping oil in. If they are clean as a whistle then not?
from my experience, diesels do tend to eat turbos opposed to engine components. usually because people bring them on to full boost stone cold day in and day out.
good luck with the repair though

The pipe we took off was the one that sits on the side of the turbo inlet, but I can't remember if it was the one from the filter or the one going to the inlet manifold
There was a breather pipe attached to it though so that would indicate it was before the boost kicked in right?
He's a bit busy now so it probably won't get looked out for a week or so

yeah, if there was a breather in it i would imagine it would be pre turbo. (il add that im not familiar with fiesta diesels so sorry for vagueness) it would boost into the rockercover and/or sump lol
hi have you taken the breather or oil filler cap off while the engine is running ? if theres oil flipping out or smoke puffing out that means you have a lot crankcase pressure which means compression is getting past the rings .If you took it to a garage you should be able to get a compression test done for about 30 mins labour cost, or you can buy one at machine mart for about £25 and you can test your valves as well,
i dont know if its still available many years ago you were able to buy piston seal have a look around the better accessary shops , if you are constantly topping up oil i"d say rings.
sorry thought it was a petrol car getting old you know, you can still get a compression test done on a diesel but its likely to cost double ,and dont buy a tester they cant cope with diesel compression.
