J871yhk, the link you've put up says "This Virtual Directory does not allow contents to be listed.". also, i'm having trouble navigating the BMW website as it seems not agree with my browser (IE 6) and its frezing and loading slowly.

GARETH T, does the money go up after the 1st year, and what to? whats the training like, is it good?

the problem i have, is my parents are moving to Cornwall soon, so if i have an apprenticeship thats not in Cornwall, it needs to be enough money that i can live on. its hard finding apprenticeships that sound good and also pay good money. the BT ones pay well (10k 1st year) but they seem a bit boring. the Ford one works out at 8.4k a year before tax.

i want engineering, fabrication, welding, mechanic, sparky, etc. basically anything hands on with good future options.

I think Alex's apprenticehsips are for Service Technicians not manufacturing like the Ford one at Bridgend.

If its solely a manufacturing one your after, I shouldnt bother with the Ford one. Bound to be other companies doing the same thing.

Alex

Ive heard the BM one is good. I trust you have nothing to do with ReMit then Bunch of useless tossbags

Rich, i'm not sure what i want. i'd be more than happy with a Service Technician apprenticeship if the money is good and the prospects are bright.

if anybody knows of any decent ones, doing anything interesting (welding, sparky, cnc work, etc). doesn't have to be local either. willing to move anywhere.

Money is going to be an issue for any MA (Modern Apprenticehip) I started mine on about £7,5. But I know people that started on less.

Aersospace is another interesting one, and I "believe" the moneys better. But I know quite a few people that lost their job when BAE cut back a bit. Dunsfold Aerodrome for example, so not sure on long term.

Have a look at.

I did a Mech/Elec Apprenticeship at Dagenham, i have absolutely no regrets at all

Started it in 1996 straight out of school, finnished in 2001. The money does go up as you advance through the stages, i think the training i recieved is really good, much better than the training some of my friends had by going elsewhere.

Im working in Dagenham Engine Evaluation Dept now, earning good money and i've got a job i really enjoy

PM me if you want any more info,

HTH

escort1989uk: i feel im in the same boat as yourself as i would love to have a job in the motor industry but im only just realising this. now im stuck as a civil servant. i would leave right now but i couldnt cope with the drop in wages.
i really made the wrong decissions when at school. i should have left at 16 and learnt a trade but i stayed on basically because it was easier than working. i would be interested in finding out more about any schemes like the ones mentioned above

Well just to put the pair of you off. The Motor Industry is cack. Especially service technicians at dealerships. There are virtually no apprentices nowadays anyway.

Who really wants to go and work in a workshop with a shutter thats nearly always "Close that fucking door!" Who really wants to get covered in CV grease, who really wants to have to pay out thousands of pounds on Snap On tools

Who really wants the in-out-next job for 40 hours a week. Bonus Bonus BONUS Rush Rush. Dont muck it up it will cost you money.

Not bad apprentiship to do, I was a multi-skilled trainee for 2 years then specialised in machining and tool making which is what i still do today.

BM is the best in the country,,, Grade 1 ALI

No of course we don't deal with ReMit or EMTEC (sp).

WE currently have about 260 apprentices and only 150 dealers... not too bad going I don't think and well above average for the industry!

To be honest i think i would take any pretty much any job now that could get me out of the civil service for near the same money. its fooking shite. i work with people who are nothing like me, doing boring work, i get no thanks and the media slates everything we do. i have to watch everything i say. i really would love a job with cars weather its selling them or working with them or anything really but i cant afford to drop my wages that much due to other comitments.

i wish i had more direction when i was 15-16 so i could have chose my path better, feel like im stuck in a rut, plus i dont think theres much opotunity in the north east

I'm currently on the 3rd year of a modern apprenticeship for the bank of england.
It dont matter where you go but you will always meet someone who done an apprenticeship at fords!! They was one of the biggest employers for quite a while.
But thats changed now since the dagenham has changed.
Most electrical/mechanical apprenticeships are similar. You will do well to find a dual trade one. Mine is electrical but if i get taken on after then it will be made dual skilled. Alough i have covered a fair bit of mechanical skills both at work and college. The money is good to, i started on 10k and its gone up just over 3k each year.
Thames water do a good apprenticeship but it is fairly demanding. Similar money to what i get though.
I go to college with some people doing their apprenticeship with thames and london underground, both sound reansonable.

I doubt anyone would regret doing an apprenticeship rather that going to college, you get education, paid and experience and a possible job at the end of it.

I'd go for it if I was you mate, the further along the recruiment process you get you will seewhat sort of work you will be doing and you can always drop out if it dont sound ideal for you.

I look back now at school and college and wish i wasnt pushed towards the accademic side of things... it really didnt cut it for me and is mainly why i never went to uni...
In a way i wish i was not accedemically minded (ie i wish i was thick ) and had been told my only options were 'motor vehicle' or manual work ie plumbing, building etc.
these options were never given to me, had they have been and had i actually realised you can earn a very good wage by fixing cars or installing heating in someones house then i would have jumped at the chance!
Even now if i could afford to live of 8k a yr (NEEEEEEEEVER gonna happen) i would happily jack in my job and become a mechanic, plumber, or anything that was hands on!

You could afford to if you wanted to...

Most people don't want to and that’s the issue....

I made some serious sacrifices a few years back and in fact I still am (living with my folks)...

Needs must when the devil drives!
