you dont have to skim the head, but always check with something like a metal ruler (on end) to make sure it is flat, make sure you get all the old gasket off first as this will give you a false reading if you dont, i dont know what they charge now, and they normally like them stripped down,

BUT

Not always necessary.

For example....

If you spotted an over heat and turned off immediately and through whatever means found that the head gasket had gone AND your head gasket is a fibre type you're likely to be fine.

BUT

If it's metal prob best to skim

AND

If you drive it and fuck it up and over heat it over and over again it's best to skim

As a general rule, yes.

Especially if it has overheated, as the head would have warped.

What are you like with mechanics?

You will need a torque wrench, along with various other tools and you need to know the tightening sequence etc, if you get this wrong not only will it need to be redone all again but you could end up damaging something.

it really is false economy not to have it skimmed, because you run the risk of forking out for another gasket set if it fails straight away. do it right, do it once

You would need to have a very good reason to not have it skimmed.

I always have the head checked by my local guy. He has on a few occasions phoned to say the head is fine and no skimming required. He also phoned me on a Fiat head to say there was nothing left to skim to as so much meat had been removed in the past, a worry on a 40k mile car

Only time skipped the check was when my Felpro failed but that went between 2 cylinders and left no marks on anything other than the crap gasket
