I always have the head checked by my local guy. He has on a few occasions phoned to say the head is fine and no skimming required. He also phoned me on a Fiat head to say there was nothing left to skim to as so much meat had been removed in the past, a worry on a 40k mile car

Only time skipped the check was when my Felpro failed but that went between 2 cylinders and left no marks on anything other than the crap gasket
