As a general rule, yes.

Especially if it has overheated, as the head would have warped.

What are you like with mechanics?

You will need a torque wrench, along with various other tools and you need to know the tightening sequence etc, if you get this wrong not only will it need to be redone all again but you could end up damaging something.
