Default Rear wishbone

Hi guys,

quick questions.

I know there is a slight variation on the rear Mk4 wishbones as some had load valves and some did not.

However, does the size of the rear inner wishbone vary?

I ordered poly bushes but they are way too big!

Thanks
Simon

If you could be more specific it'd help, are your bushes the floflex ones?

I assume you mean the bottom arm which bolts to the hub. When i poly bushed mine i had to drill/burn out the inner bushes and press the new ones in, they're moulded in originally so aren't easy to get out.

There's another variation of wishbone too, the turbo's had an extra bracket for attaching the roll bar too, but the rest of the mountings should still be the same.

Might have a picture or two of mine when i painted and re bushed them a few months ago if you need to see how they were.

No not the hub one, thats the outer, the inner is the one which sits under the chasis if you get me.

No its not floflex. I got them off a rally specialist.

The differnce in the RS to the others is the rear load valve thing.

Its the actual size of the bush Im talking about

Robbed pic of Daz, left bush is just beside the orange exhaust carrier, the right inner bush is obvisouly opposite the left

cheers for reply

Yeah i know which you meant, i was referring to the hub due to a brain fart. But its the one which joins the hub to the inner chassis part.

Thats the part i was on about. As far as I'm aware the bushes aren't easily replaceable like they are on the front, i bent on of my rear arms slightly trying to get the bushes pressed to so had to straighten it again and drill/burn the rubber out. I'll see if i've got a decent picture of just the arm with the poly bushes in.

Hopefully these can be of help:

Stripped for paint and original bushes removed

After coating and bushes fitted

I found that the original bushes were bonded rubber to a metal outer which was pressed into the arm, possibly with the arm heated to allow a tighter fit. With all that removed leaving just the arm itself the bushes i got from Floflex were a tight but good fit, required ever so slight filing of the inner edge to get them to press in square without catching and twisting, and a wipe of copper grease helped too.

They do look quite chunky and fit very snugly into the inner mounting points on the car.

They were stiff too, i fitted the Spax adjustable full kit when i was building it back up not realising it was more suited to track work. Bit annoying when you weren't in the mood for a firm ride, but fantastic the rest of the time.

Turned it from rolly, sloppy 22 year old drive to a balanced, keen and controllable toy. I did the steering rack bushes in poly too which i wasn't sure about at first, but it made such a difference. I could feel a bit of movement at the tyres even though the wheel wasn't moving beforehand whilst cornering over a crest for example, afterwards it was totally predictable and direct.

Im afraid i can't mate i haven't got the car anymore, sold it a few months ago!

My bushes came in two halves with a steel tube through the centre, which i assume was so the bushes were snug in their mounting and the tube stopped the chassis crushing them to the point where they stopped the arm moving.

Where the bush was, is there still a metal lip/hoop inside? If you don't get that out i think you'll struggle getting new ones in. It was easier to get the rubber to tear away from its metal outer than it was to get that out of the arm. Might be a simple case of a few mins with a hacksaw blade if the ring is still in yours?

hiya matie, i am talking about the outer bushes the ones that are top hat shaped there is 2 a side, i have the old ones out and there is no metal sleeve on the bushes although the inner ones that bolt to the chassis have metal sleeves, as for the outer ones there is no way they will go in they measure around 28mm and the ones i took out are about 22mm.

Have you had a good look at my pictures above? The last one shows the rear arms with newly fitted flo flex bushes.

Just make sure there isnt an extra metal ring inside where the new bush should go, I had to bevel the ends of some of the bushes to get them to go in straight, and a bit of copper grease made them easier to squeeze in with the vice.

bump this back up

im after some knowledge and confirmation on something, i removed the rubber bush a while ago, now ive tried to re-fit the new bushes and they are very tight and seem to big - ive noticed above that the old bushes have a metal sleeve is this correct?

and if so do both the inner and outer bushes have metal sleeves?

and whats the best way to remove them?

thanks

use a small hack saw - take off the blade, put it into the sleeve, then reattach blade, cut and pull out with pliers

head over to the RSOC and look for the rear tie bar thread in the S2 section.... plenty of info and pics about these bushes and wishbones as ive just been shot in the foot by fooking flo-flex crappy bushes. Powerflex all the way...... turns out Flo-flex actually sell smaller bushes that you need but funnily enough me and someone else bought the same kit and both were the wrong ones. Flo-flex have fooked up their end and wont admit it.

DO NOT buy Flo-flex as per the thread posted in the RSOC S2 section.

Was jarrd last night - if u have taken the bush out then cut out the sleeve then just push in new bush, it may need limitless shaving- done!

all three sleeves? i was worried about the two outer ones which i have removed

just seems strange that some people leave the sleeve in and others remove them, will it handle the same with them removed?

If you remove the sleeves and put the rear end on axle stands with the wheels on rock the wheels left to right if they move it'll fail an MoT and means theres play in the bushes....this happened with the flo-flex outer bushes fitted and sleeves fitted so without them it'll be even worse.
