St 170 sub and wiring please help info needed
Hi i have a st 170 no sub i have a aftermarket sub amp and stereo is there a power wire already in the car for sub that i can use... As i no some come with subs so would that wiring be there thanks glyn
what is your set up that you are going to put in?? cheeRS
I've just installed the factory subwoofer in my ST170 using my Sony CDX - GT420U headunit as the 9006 I got with it has issues with loading cd's.
The wiring was already installed from front to rear (which I understand is true with all ST170's) so I just modded the RCA sub output and amp remote from the Sony to suit the Ford wiring. Loads of people will tell you it can't be done, but it can - you do need a HU with a sub output though.
The standard wiring is already connected to a constant positive feed and ground, but it's not a heavy high ampage feed cable and may not suit the particular amp you're going to use. You'll also find that on the boot end of the sub loom the plug has two red wires (+), two black wires (-) and three white wires with a red stripe - one of white/reds is the + signal input, one is the - or screen input, and the other is the amp remote. Nice of Mr Ford to make that confusing ?????
If you're fitting a complete aftermarket system I'd run all new cables to be on the safe side, but if you can get hold of a factory ST subwoofer, I can recommend that very highly - very stealth, and excellent sounds.
If anyone needs the wiring info for connecting the Factory sub to an aftermarket headunit, I'm happy to share my knowledge.

Hi Danny,
Providing you have the loom which runs rear to front for the factory sub, and your Pioneer Headunit has a dedicated sub output, it's very simple.
Take a single RCA lead (you sub out should be mono so you only need to connect to one side - left or right) - cut off the plug from one end to make a short lead and strip the wires so you have the inner insulated wire and the braided screen.
On the plug which comes up from the sub loom you should see the wires as the diagram below;

You need to connect the inner insulated wire on your RCA lead to the White and Black wire on the plug (pin 2), then the screen from the RCA to pin 1, which is a Grey and Black wire, and finally, you need to connect the amp remote wire from your headunit to pin 5 which is the White and Red wire.
Make sure your connections are good - soldered is best - or you may find you get a hum from the sub.
Make sure you set your low pass filter, on the headunit, if you have one for the best results.
One last thought - If you had the 9006 Headunit in the car and the sub wasn't working with that connected, might be worth looking the the sub amp fuse which I think is number 24 in the fuse box under the bonnet.
Good luck, hope you get things sorted.
Pete

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread but im in the same boat as many on here. Got my ST170 recently, picked up an OEM sub off of ebay and put in a 30amp fuse in spot 24. Sub not working!!! So pulled out the stereo (after market Sony unit with sub output) and found the Amp Remote wire (blue one) is not connected to anything. Do i need to tap this into another wire or am i missing something else?
Any advice will be great, cheers, Rich.

Not a problem always happy to try and help, Yes the subwoofer remote from the back of your sony headunit now needs connecting to the cars wiring loom so it can turn the subwoofers amplifier on when the headunit is powered up. To do this u need to use the connector block from the steering wheel controls as shown in the diagram posted above by pampy. Its pin 5 and the cable should be white and red if u connect your headunits remote wire to that it should turn it on, also have u connected the phono lead from the back of you sonys headunit into the cars standard wiring???

Hi mate, thanks for the help. That seems simple enough, I will just tap into the cable at pin 5. As for the phono lead to the standard wiring, I'm lost with this. Is there any simple instructions for this, im awful at this kind of stuff!
Thanks again.
Thanks again.
There isnt really a simply diagram to follow as such however when i get home i will take a photo of the connections i have had to do and how i striped the phono cable because if u strip it incorrectly u will here a permanent buzzing or interferance sound coming from the sub which is very annoying, and ill tell u which part of the cable goes to which wire on the steering wheel control plug after that it should work a treat, have u got the option to adjust the subwoofer setting in the sony headunit u have??

Top man, cheers Danny. My Headunit does have setting to adjust the sub. Just been over halfords and they want £30 to wire it in so if i can do it then all good!
Will await your response and see if i can get it working. Thanks again.
Richard.

Can you explain @digibox92 how to do this correctly? I've got everything plugged and got an old phono cable and stripped it but I think I maybe got something wrong...
Sorry to bring this up again...but I'm debating with the buzzing sound from the subwoofer.

Hi have you got the subwoofer powered and working, but it's now buzzing while no music is playing? 🤔
if so the sheild around your cable is touching something on the stripped phono end behind the head unit?
failing that when you power down the stereo/sub can you hear the sub sort of pop on power down if so that could be a bad earth on the subwoofer end to the chassis of the car 🤔

If it's the cable, do you advice in any specific cable? Might well try it now that I have the headunit out...
Hi there mate, hope you're well, with regards to installing the standard st170 sub, I'm buying the car Friday 3rd February 2023, it comes with the subwoofer installed and a pioneer head unit, the sub isn't currently connected to it and I'm just wondering how you went about making it all work together?
kind regards
David
