The main common faults end up being Injector issues and Dual mass flywheel/clutch failure. Both can be rather expensive to fix. Recon injectors are about £600 a set and a full clutch/DMF kit is around the same for the parts alone.
Cracking cars though, mine has done 130,000 miles now and is still on its origional injectors/clutch and i'm not exactly easy on it.
I guess its partly the luck of the draw.
My long term fuel average according to the onboard computer is 49mpg.

2.2s seem to be less prone to injector issues than the 2.0.

If you run them on decent fuel, i.e BP Ultimate or Optimax then it helps massively I run mine on BP and although dearer i get more miles, better performance and less noise from the engine. When i run shit diesel i know it...!!!

most modern common rail diesels can suffer with injector, pump, dmf and egr problems as well as dpf if fitted and only doing short runs in traffic and as said the 2.2's are more reliable than the 2.0's.

Depending on the millage it is worth taking off the inlet manifold and cleaning it up and the inlet ports in the head and then fit an egr blanking plate on reassembly and don't be afraid to rag the life out of it every once in a while. Every car benefits from a good booting now and then.

the st tdci's are very nice cars and well worth considering.

This will bring the EML on on the 2.2. It's arguably better to make sure it's regularly cleaned.

As dan said if its the EURO 4 engine it will bring on the EML light. If its the euro 3 you can block the EGR valve off.

You can tell if the EGR valve has a vacuum hose its euro 3 and if it has eletcrical connector its euro 4.

I had to replace my EGR valve when i got my car but been fine for the past 20k.

I think if you drive them short distance and they dont get up to running temp it makes the egr valve fail.

I drive mine min 20 miles to work and 20 back again so always up to running temp before turned off again.

The injectors are more common to fail on the early 05 ones, ford modified the software on the later ones IIRC from early 06.

You can get injectors remanufactured for around £120 each.

The DMF is as common to fail as any other diesel TBH.

I have a bluefin and a decat in mine and it was rolling roaded at 172 bhp with around 436 NM torque.

I think it will bring the EML light on any of them if the EGR valve is electronic.

Some people say you can get a blanking plate with a small hole in it and it doesnt bring the EML light on tho from what ive read it always ends up bringing it on sooner or later anyway.

If you need an EGR valve you can buy the jag one which is about £115 compared to £300 from ford.

I've got a 54 plate ST TDCi and love it, only had it a short while but I paid good money for a very tidy & low miles car - very good cars when you get a good one!

Loads of people fit blanking plates to the 2.0's without problems from what i've heard. I guess it depends on how sofisticated the system is so its very vehicle and year specific.

if the egr is vacuum operated, you can blank it of no problems. If it's electric, you can blank it off but drill a 2mm hole in the plate, that should turn the light out!!

I've got an ST Tdci and love it, i get an average of 49 mpg with a de cat and egr blanked. The de cat makes a real difference in driveability.
I just had to have my Engine ecu re flashed with the latest level software as mine had a warm start issue, when you start it, the eml light would be on for about 5 secs and you couldn't rev it. Cost me £60 at Fords, and it's sorted.
If you have kids, keep a look out for one with the factory fitted dvd player and screens, there are real good quality and easy to add a PS2 onto!!
