HELP building zetec turbo!!!!
Hi my names Wes, maybe you can help me,
I have a sierra sapphire 2000e 4x4 I am about to start building zetec turbo for it and i'm looking for 300bhp, so far I have an st170 engine (I'm hearing its best too use these as they have forged internals but even still do the internals need too be changed for a set of steel rods and forged pistons from burtons)?
what head do i use (st170 head a blacktop head or frs head and do I need too buy some cams)? what headgasket and do I need a decomp plate too? what inlet do I use (is a frs inlet any good but which turbo/turbo housing)? is there anything else I will need. Oh and where do I get mounts from as i'm
cheers for any help it is much appreciated Wes

Ford have already produced a Zetec Turbo, so if I were you, I would sell the ST170 engine on and purchase a mk1 Focus RS engine and run it on some bespoke management.

forged pistons Ł136.45 (burton powers) steel rods Ł177.94 (burton powers) arp studs for head and rods Ł56.00 frs headgasket Ł16.00
omex management Ł600 which I have to use weather i use frs engine or build one! I can get blacktop head for Ł50.00

Well for 1 I already have a st170 engine cost virtually nothing, a frs engine is Ł1500-2000 thats just for engine no inlet, turbo just bare engine

FRS engine surely isn't 2k?

pistons/rods will be priced per item, so * those figures by 4 is approx Ł1200 before building the engine etc, it soon adds up PEC do a package thats Ł800 for both IIRC, better going there than getting stung with burton tax, although I don't know what the st170 rods are capable of.

just use the whole st engine, thick zetec head gasket, not sure which, just find a blacktop type one that is 1.8mm thick.
the rest of the engine is sound. Karlos G has gone this route if i remember correctly (IIRC).
if you do decide to go for steel rods and forged pistons, then hit the states for those, i got custom sized ones with rods for less than Ł800 delivered just over a year ago.

Only reason I ask about which head with cams to use is because KARL said in a recent post:
There are many ways to design such a 300 hp zetec turbo engine:
1 - bigger cams and much more rpm - thus lower boost required to achieve 300 hp.
2 - factory cams, restricted intake, low rpm - thus much higher boost required to achieve 300hp - more prone to self destruct.
3 - High flow heads, intake manifold, and exhaust manifolds, high efficiency intercooler, performance cams etc.. = now really low boost levels to reach 300 hp.

pec do rods and piston packages, standard cams are fine for that level, a blacktop head and cams will do 400 bogo, just go for a good turbo and intake package and your piss 300

depends on your block mate, 86mm is norm i think, if you search PEC pistons on google, i would use a custom intake, like a area six inlet, or better still go on the area six web site, this is ian howell, one of the best in the business with zetec turbos, as for low boost, if your going forged than 2bar is possible

check the bore size to make sure its standard size, then get the next size up of piston, as i would not run standard size piston, always get a overbore.
