Water Temperature Gauge High
hi guys
just had all my sensors changed and new stat, new water pipes (samco) and my gauge doesn't seem to read right??
it gets near the red but not into it.
here is when the fans kick in

and heres where they stop.

could i have used the wrong sender???
any info would be great
thanks

If the fans kick in and out as normal ad there's no other signs of overheating (new stat sticking etc), then deffo it's the sender that's wrong. Have you got the old one to put back in to confirm?
these are the bits that have been fitted, all bits are from MSD
UPRATED Ford Sierra Cosworth Fan Switch.
YB Temperature Gauge Sender Unit.
YB Weber 4 Sensor kit Weber. ACT-CTS-Phase & CPS
4wd Cosworth 82 degree Thermostat.
now its actually a 2wd head with 4x4 stat housing. dont know if that would make a difference thou???

Was the Escos switch not different, i.e. four pin opposed to two?
The Escos had dual speed fans opposed to the Sierra's single.
My guess is that this problem has only happened since the "Uprated" switch was fitted?
Reason being is that it closes at circa 90 degrees, as the problem with the original one was that it activated too early and stayed on for too long but from memory the slow speed on the Escos activates around the same temperature.
When driving along, does the gauge read what you know as "Normal"?

Correct, exactly as I said then!
It's not a problem, it's just the higher span of the "Uprated" switch.
So the fans activate later and only stay on for a few degrees.
I don't know too much about the Escos dual speed setup, as I say I assume you had a four pin switch before, opposed to the two pin you now have?
I always thought the second speed of the Escos fan was around 100 degrees though, it all depends on whether the switch you removed was two or four pin?

So does that mean the temp gauge is not giving a reliable reading?? How can I sort it so it gives an accurate reading
Also the temp switch I think was from a sierra as there was no two stage they just came on and went off when upto temp, also I have the after market slimline fans installed, I also noticed it ran hotter when I put my Airtec 80mm intercooler on as I think it blocks the airflow a bit
Thanks

Yes the "Uprated" switch from MSD is designed to replace the standard Sierra one which has a terrible span.
The Escos though had dual speed fans, yes thats true if it's like a "RS500 style" as it blocks the rad it will increase the overall temperature.
No, the fact the fans cycle show it's not overheating, as said.
The temperature gauge seems to be working fine (or as reliable as they can be)

I might have to get a secs monitor for more reliable readings then, as I would also like to see the oil temps and AFR and a propper boost idea as the escos only goes to 1.3 bar and I'm off the scale.
Thanks Martin for your help, I just don't want to be doing another cooper rings head gasket again cos there not cheap.

No problem, SECS will not give you any information on oil, it will boost and temperature however, you are aware you have to solder the connections onto the ECU though?
All it is I suspect due to the IC that has made it run hotter, hence the higher reading on the gauge, if it were overheating fans would be on all the time, coolant boiling up etc.

I'll keep my eye on it and see about getting an after market temp gauge just to make sure
I've a sneaky feeling the wiring is already in there for it, as there's a wire coming out where the ashtray was like something like a secs monitor was originally fitted, if not I can solder one in myself,

ive had the same problem with mine,my temp gauge used to stay about half way up the gauge and the sensor packed up (earthed out)i bought another sensor from mds and temp went up to near the red exactly the same as yours,i then bought another sensor from my local motor factors and tried that and yes it was still near the red i then changed my fan switch,it still kicked in near the red i then decided to check my sensor by putting the sensor in boiling water while still wired up to my gauge..i noticed that when my gauge was near the red the boiling water was only showing 80-90 degrees on a thermometer.
i have driven the car all over even went to rscentral day the other week 130 miles with no problems other than the gauge showing close to red like yours ,i will be getting a different temp gauge as i think it must have gone faulty.hope this helps

Yeah I went for a blast yesterday and everything seemed ok, do you think it's the gauge itself that's faulty??? Any ideas where to get another or how to fix it?? Let me know how you get on with yours matey,
Thanks for the info

apparently, been told by quite a few people the standard temp gauge are unreliable.
i have got a spare one i bought with a job lot of bits last year ,when i get time im going to dig it out and try that one,the only problem with that one is i dont know if its any good or not but will be intresting to see, i will let you know.
Not really been bothered about it that much as it runs spot on

does anyone know what causes this?? and can it be fixed on the back of the dial???
as getting hold of the temp gauge is near impossible.
it obviously worked before so somethings obviously gone. it would be interesting to see what.

I should think it's due to the intercooler as this will make it run a little hotter thus the gauge reads higher, they arn't the most accurate for example in the summer mine from memory goes up more than driving around in cooler conditions.
The gauge itself is simple, the sender's resistance decreases as the temperature increases hence giving a higher reading, other than that there can only be something wrong with the gauge.
