One of the locals at my pub was asking me about a problem with his car (Zafira diesel turbo) Having trouble with the turbo, felt like it had very little boost compared to what it used to.
I said at a random guess it would be the actuator.
Turns out, it was the actuator needed replacing. So the local vauxhall dealership did the work and handed him the bill for £970!
That seems a bit steep to me? or is it like an engine out job or something?

most new vauxhalls are complete units, around £550 main dealer part, normally with vauxhall its a sensor that puts them into limp mode then it feels like very low boost,my old vec c had a forge dump valve and when the springs went in that vauxhall tryed saying it needs a new turbo, also they have a electrical boost sensor that failed only £10 but vauxhall wanted to change the turbo

Same with Euro4 Mondeo TDCis, the actuator fails and is usually a case of repairing a dodgy solder - Ford will only replace the entire unit.

Yeah that was the bill for the car back to working order.
I guess if its a whole unit that might be awkward to get to its not as bad as I first thought.
Obviously when he was telling me about it I just thought of the £70 my new actuator cost a while ago.

It essentially controls the size of the turbine housing by moving the vanes in the vnt unit, by varying the gas flow onto the turbine you can have the effect of both small and larger turbine/turbine housings.
There really is no wastegate at all. To control the boost pressue you can use the vn's to speed up or slow the gas flow across the turbine thus reduce the quantity of air available

Well that has cleared that up for me.
I guess I was just shocked by the initial price. Knowing its a full unit being replaced I can understand the price a bit more.
