Transferring a private plate
When I sold my Car last month I took my private plate off it. I am now buying a replacement tomorrow, but............what paperwork do I need to transfer my plate onto it????? I'm presuming I need some sort of retention paperwork or something along they lines but I can't find anything except the original receipt from the dvla from when I bought the plate.

iirc they give you a certificate and the plate removal and putting on retention charge included the cost to put it on another car within 12 months.
Without the certificate it may be a case of calling the dvla to see if you can get a duplicate for it. After 12 months irrc you loose the right to the plate.

I definitely don't have any retention certificate,in fact I don have any paperwork from when I removed the plate,I'm now wondering if I've left it all with the paperwork for the car when it sold! Hopefully they can supply a duplicate! I'm meant to be changing the plate over first thing in the morning which is a shambles.
Thanks for both replies

Replacing a lost or stolen retention document
The grantee will need to request a replacement document in writing. Requests will only be accepted from the grantee. There is no charge.
You might not have had the retention yet;
DVLA, Swansea will send you:
And you wouldn't have been putting the reg on tomorrow;
What happens next
Once your DVLA local office receives your application they may need to inspect the vehicle and will contact you to arrange an appointment. If they don’t need to inspect your vehicle, they’ll approve your application within two weeks.
You will also be sent a new registration certificate (V5C) for your vehicle showing the new registration number. This should arrive within four weeks of the confirmation letter. It can take up to six weeks if a V62 application was used to support the application.

Looks like I might not have received it yet the,weve had this house upside down tonight lol, I've just spoken to the guy I sold my car to and he definitely doesn't have anything. Got the log book fairly quickly after the transfer so I would have thought it shouldn't be far away.
I'll go ino the dvla office in the morning and see what they say
