group b cars
just watching the programme for last night and just wondering
how fast were the quickest of the group b cars (delta s4, quattro, rs200 etc)
compared to the wrc cars of today
or any other car (rs) come to that

Think they would be a lot quicker in a straight line, but handling as moved on a lot and would think on a twisty stage the wrc cars would be quicker, but maybe not as challenging to drive as the group b ones.

Most of the stages that the Group B cars ran aren't used on the modern WRC in the same form.
I don't know how true this is, but I was reading on a rally forum earlier, and it was bandied about that even by the mid 90s, all the records set by the Group B cars had been broken by Group A stuff.
The Group B cars were very powerful, but suspension and brakes have come a long way since those days.

Really interesting programme as i've never seen anything that went deep in to the sport.
Really makes you wonder where the cars were heading, if the incidents never happened, from watching the documentary they were just ploughing money in to it as it was shifting cars and preventing companies from going under, mixing that with the insane hunger for success & imaginations of the team bosses and designers could have produced insane machines

Mine too, would love to meet him, really enjoyed the interview bits with him.
As for what's faster, straight line Grp b but point to point a modern world car would be much quicker !
Not sure out of all the Grp b cars if it's the rs200 I'd have, I prefer the later Rallycross evolution 200's, The Grp b Audi does it for me, I doubt anything will ever beat the noise of one of those
The Group B cars were awesome, im glad i got the chance to see them in the forests at full chat in the 80's....stupidly quick & talented drivers keeping them on the road.
We met Ari last year at the MINI service on Wales GB, also spoke to him at Comber Rally. One of the true legends who find time to talk to fans.

I'm like you was lucky enough to see them live as a young boy, I've met most of the drivers from that era and have a lot of autographs that I cherrish
There is NOTHING like the sound of an Audi S1 EVO 2 on full chat
Very special time in motorsport but shame the spectators were not managed better :-(
Plenty of 6r4's still going in clubman events and pull good results. Only a good group a or WRC will be on par beat it obviously these arent world drivers but as was said earlier due to tyres, sus and brakes becomming far superior to engine power modern WRC cars and even the group a cars would complete a stage. Mind a 600 brake quattro S1 ripping over crests in Finland is something modern cars will never do!
Just feel I was really lucky that Group B was my time when I was in my late teens.
Just look at some of the Group B cars that are now used for Hillclimbing and you'll realise how quick they were, and still are.

I think it would be fair to say a 0-60 time of 3 seconds and 100 in 7-8 seconds.
I remember a quote from john Stone who used to run a "proper" 6R4 with the 2.5 engine. He said the Porsche 911 Turbo road car he had didnt come close to the sensation of the metro!

WRC cars are definitely quicker round a stage than a group B car but the romance and passion around that time will never be equalled IMO

I got run over by Tony Pond in his 6R4 in the service area once, he wasn't amussed i got in his way
WRC cars are much quicker. Remember Colin McRae did sweeper at the Donegal Int in his 6R4 Metro? The all the locals in WRC cars where setting considerably faster times.
You do see metros still being used but they aren't the original Austin Rover 3 liters they are modern 2.5l jaguar engines with 425+bhp and more torque(Mountune may build them iirc), they also have more modern steering, suspension and braking components so in the right hands they can be reasonably competitive.

Group B cars only look faster because they're far more wayward really. Modern WRC cars are pretty composed.
Give me a Group A car though, safer, just as quick as a Group B car, but still spectacular in the right hands

I remember an interview with one of the Group B Drivers.... He said He looked at the spectators as if they we're trees..... said He had too, or He could never have driven that fast so close to so many unpredictable people.
I asked this exact question awhile ago but can't find the thread.
As others have said modern day suspension, brakes, ALS and tyres make them faster than the Group B stuff ever was. In fact, there were a few stages I was told that both these types of cars did and the WRC examples were considerably quicker.
With regards to how Group B would have evolved, Audi was fed up with loosing and was building a mid-engine replacement that supposedly hads as much as 1000 bhp... Ugly fucker though!

I suspect you may have seen a Group S car, which was even rarer and was twin turbo (though I can't remember if they were supercharged too). Where was this? What colour was it?
he was trying to make a compo claim against the driver and his argument was that it was the drivers lack of experiance that caused him to crash not the 1000's of fans standing on the road playing chicken
he then went on to say, "if a car crashes into a house, is it the drivers fault or the house's fault?"
they dont build houses in the middle of fucking roads do they!
group b cars sound awsome still get a chill when i hear them now, was a good programme that, if group b was still around today it would be WRC as thats what grp a evolved into and that basically became the focus after grp b was banned, it is a shame its gone but they are bringin it back for historic rallies i hear, with the evo models not allowed just the early stuff with a 350bhp cap so the 037/sport quat/205t16/nissan240rs/manta400/911 will be back eventually i hope.
See that 1000bhp Audi^^^^ , it caused 2 Audi test drivers to be sacked because they "refused" to drive it, due to its utter power and speed AWESOME LOL
IMO if all the current WRC cars are quicker than the GRP B stuff due to better engine, trans and suspension tech.......and also with better crowd and driver safety, why havent they made a new style GRP B???? Imagine modern tech and limitless power on a WRC stage?? I know there is Pikes Peak, but thats a one way single stage. Multiple stages and massive powered monsters would be one better than GRP B and one last chance at something interesting before this alternative fuel shite gets fully into swing!

Most group B cars were around the 420bhp mark, the Audi went as high as 530 (heard of more but I don't really know how accurate the figures are) as said, suspension technology has improved loads sinse then, so a modern WRC car would leave them, but maybe not sound as good. A lot don't know that the manta 400 was a group B car as well in the end (approx 270bhp). The 205 was probably the most succsesful of the bunch, as it was lighter and more nimble than the auddi
