Default Q plates

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2010-JAGUA...93783659007169

i came across this 2010 car on Q plate on ebay, and gave this reason for being on a Q plate .........

this model came from the Jaguar test center as a test vehicle and was sold then complete minus its ecu's and was never registered hence the Q prefix. First reg in 2010 would fetch a small fortune if you reg abroad and then brought it back! ........

Exactly what I thought, they crush them not sell them on to be Q plated. Be interesting to hear Jaguars take on this..

my thaughts

Q plate is from an old XJS

Q plate cars im sure came about when the origional ID of the car could not be identified, they were given new chassis and reg numbers.

i didnt think they gave out Q`s anymore?

Jaguar would most certanly NOT remove parts and sell them on under any circumstance, nor would any dealer for that matter, i worked at Nissan and you would cry when you seen the cars they crushed for imperfections!

Yes they are still issued.
And they aren't transferable and as far as I know aren't re-issued.

Worth a small fortune if reg'd abroad then brought back. Ok then if so why ain't you done it?

Been told you can put a private plate on it. By who some random nobber in a pub, as would defeat the whole point of q plates

Looks like normal eBay lies to sell a shady car!

i had a quick look at the DVLA website it seems that Q plates are still issued in cases of rebuilt, radically altered or kit cars:

If i was in the market for one of these I would get an RAC inspection on it for a few hundred quid and buy it tbh as you have a fair bit of comeback with those RAC checks if u get the good one........

Then you have that as a back up if anything is untoward as its a proper car for good money.

You never know, the guy may be genuine and it may be exactly what it says it is.......

my guess as i said before is 100% had all the ID cut off it and it couldnt be identified, insurers paid out to customer and it was then sold as a cat c or X with no ID (cat X is stolen/rec with keys and found un damaged, or atleast it was 8 or so years ago when i was in that game)

why does it need mot in 2012, not 2013, if first reg was 2010 it should be good till 2013 all new cars including q plate and kit cars are good for 3 years!!!!!!!!!!!

No one noticed a nice little loophole with q plates?
They use the same emission data as 1973 cars therefore that's only Ł215 to tax a year and at the extremely high emission figures they put out that's saving Ł250.
Also they do sell off test cars, two were sold from our plant but they had been used on the road as we tested our rear diffs in them for many years,a red 3.0l x type and a blue 2.5l x type.
The blue one had a special ECU to take any type of rear axle fitted instantly to it,no need to reprogramme.
They were both road legal though and clean.

Development cars do get sold off i mot'd a grey mg zr on a q about three years ago it had done 1230 miles an on a Q plate it was an early shape one probably made circa 2000/2001, however the vin number was only 12 digits long not the usual 17 and never registered with the dvla.
The guy who owned it bought it from a liquidator who was selling stuff from the longbridge factory the car came with a little bit of documentation to say it was a development car for mg rover and not for retail, The guy paid Ł1700 for it applied for a log book and because the date of manufacture could not be established was put on a Q, next stop an mot as its classed as a 1973 car then road tax and on the road.
The guy who owned it did some research on where the car had been and it turned out that the car along with another seven had been in a lock-up since 2002 which was leased by the mg rover group.
He did have the idea to try and get the car on a private plate and was told that the Q had to stay on the car unless he could get documentation from the manufacturer stating the exact date of manufacture, as the 12 digit vin was a development number with no reference to a date this was not possible.
However he did end up with a brand new car for Ł1700 which he was going to use as a daily hack till it would not go anymore.

No mate a Q plated car is registered as a 1973 vehicle regardless of its true age and would req an mot every year as per any other 1973 car.

i'm on the kit car forums cos i have a kit car, and yes its seen as a 1973, but still gets 3 years from first reg before it needs an MOT same as any other new car.

i did think the tax was a bit to cheap for a modern v8 powered car, it would be around Ł400 for a car like that

It's a bloody nice looking car... but not sure I'd be able to talk myself into parting with that level of cash for a car on a Q-plate, despite the saving over a 'straight' example.

Cheers,
Grant

Thats because your kit car has a definative date of manufacture which you declare saying the car is new hence 3 years til mot some development cars have no date of manufacture and have been previously used but not registered and cannot be confirmed as new at registeration unless you have documentation from the manufacturer to say it is new which you are unlikely to get with a development car so in that case a Q is assigned and you will need an mot as it cannot be confimed as new.

Also just putting it out there, had a Q plate before and definitely more expensive to insure and some companies wouldn't touch it

Q plates are fine on kit cars. The problems you mention with insurance just arent an issue with companies that specialise in kit cars/customs.

Q plate on normal cars does have a reputation of being dodgy
