Default Project Popular - Superlite Road/Track Car

Well its about time i started this project thread and since im sitting round doin sod all i thought id get it goin tonite.

Back in May 09 i decided to save up a few pennies and set about finding myself a 3 door MK4 Escort. My cousin had a white 90 spec S2 RST running 230bhp and ever since id been out in his ive had a love affair with MK4's. So 8 years later i thought id get the car ive wanted since i was 12, albeit a standard model and not an rs, and after a short search this one came up on ebay and i snapped it up for 230 quid.

Now im the perfect example of "champagne taste, lemonade money" and so i began to draw up my wishlist of all the work i wanted to carry out on the car and all that was left to do was get on with it. Originally i was going to make an RS replica with a few personal touches but after an epiphany i realised it would never be a real one so i decided to go down the trackday route.

The Plan - As you have probably all sussed this is gonna be a slow project but it is a labour of love and i believe in attention to detail so there will be a lot of unique and intriquet touches.

The main focus is to shed as much weight as possible and to move as much of the weight inside the wheelbase to create better weight distribution. I wont be putting a monster engine in to start with just something basic and reliable the main focus will be on handling so thats where most of the money will be spent.

Heres a few pics of the car in its current state, ill be posting some progress over the next couple of weeks as ive got some time off so something WILL get done!!

Looks v. Tidy wheels although classic are not going to help in the handling stakes but I bet you already know that. Wouldn't mind a nice clean mk4 but these are getting thin on the ground now I couldn't say when the last time I saw one around here was probs in 04 when I had a cabby. Good luck with it.

Looks nice and clean. Seems like a bargain for Ł230 - is there much rust?

Thanks for the replies, The arrows actually came off of my cousins white S2 they probably wont be staying but it needs to sit on something it might aswell be them.

It looks cleaner than what it is, it needs a rear offside wheel arch inner and outer, a new front panel but i havnt seen an escort with a clean one!! it also has 2 holes in the floorpan where the outside seatbolts sit and i cant decide whether to cut and plate or just weld in some fresh floorpans??

Only thing i need to buy is panels as i will weld everything myself so i dont see it as that much of a big deal, other than the mentioned rust its pretty solid elsewhere battery tray, fusebox and spare wheel well are rock solid.

Will have some more pictures after this weekend after ive attacked it for a day or two.

Thought id make the most of the sunshine today and get some work done to the car.

I'm exceptionally poor at the moment so nothing exciting has happened just some stuff i can do without having to spend any money, so with that in mind the car went on a diet and most of the interior is now down the dump.

Very clean floor pan mate! Do you still have the front door cards?? I'd be interested in buying if so.
