Default Mondeo coil light coming on?

I have an 02 Mondeo 2.0 TDCI Est. The coil light keeps coming on and going into limp home mode. It can be switched off and the problem clears only to reappear when in 3rd, 4th and 5th around 2500/2750 revs when put under pressure, overtaking etc. The car has also started cutting out in limp home mode. Have had the injectors checked, fine, calibrated, new fuel filter. Been in 3 garages, £900 lighter and no better. THe last place thought maybe it was an electrical prob. Sorry but no code readings. Anyone had similar problems?

I had that problem on my old mondeo, I never got it checked out till it died and wouldn't restart. My car only did it on motorways at 70+ under load. I had a cam sensor changed and it stopped it for a while (say 5000 miles) and then restarted the cutting out. I never got to the problem as the car was then traded in for a new shape mondeo, the car had done 260,000 miles and wasn't worth messing about with.

It's worth checking the cam sensor.

I had my injectors re-calibrated by a ford mechanic and it didn't stop the coil light coming on.

can be all multitude of things, luck of the draw to fix it sometimes an easy one such as egr or cam sensor or a hard one like injector pump or injectors
mondeo tdci' s great cars when they go right pain in tha ass when they go wrong!
My advice is get it into a diesel specialist that you can trust

Was recommended this mechanic by the garage who does my servicing, bit of a diesel specialist apparently. He took my injectors to a place in Luton to be tested, all working ok. Going to fit a new cam sensor tomorrow, another thing off the list.

had this problem with my st tdci was a pain in the arse turned out to be the egr valve.

try the low pressure flow and return lines from pump to filter they drew in air through the seals had this a lot always at thoughs revs when demanding most fuel think codes are 1251 and 1664

i reckon the fuel pumps breaking down and blocking the injectors under load personally.by switching off an restarting your releasing the pressure.normally has p0251 and p1211 codes logged for fuel metering valve.new pump injectors and filter normally sorts it

Thanks for all the replys. Fitted a new cam sensor(and battery) saturday, this seems to have eased the problem although it did go into limp home mode going home from the garage when really pushed. Have used it since then and there is a definite improvment, can accelerate through the revs without it cutting out, BUT hav`nt really put it under pressure since it went saturday, owing to the snow. Will give it another go tomorrow and see what happens.

Hi,i have a 2003 mondeo tdci and last friday my car started to feel really lumpy and it smoked a bit on the motorway. I pulled over and rang the AA. They took me home but could not find any codes. Obviously it is to do with the glow plug light flashing. Today i got a diagnostic done and the codes P1211 and P0251 appeared. I understand that these are common problems. Now the car will not start and ticks over lumpy when trying to start. I dont have much spare money and i am just asking for advice/help of what things to do. I am based in Luton so any help would really be appreciated. Many thanks.

Went out yesterday to see what happened to the engine when put under pressure. It drove well, steadily pulling through the gears to about 3500 revs no problem. As soon as i put it under pressue, overtaking, it coughed at 2700 revs and the coil light came on, limp home mode. Turned it off, then on again, back to normal. Going back in the garage next tuesday, looking at the egr valve, seals on fuel pipes and getting the codes read off computer. Its getting very frustrating . Will let you know the outcome, fingers crossed we can get it sorted.

Got the car back from the garage after a week, still the same. The coil light was still flashing, running shit, nothing had been done. Chatting to a dealer friend yesterday evening and he put me on to a friend of his, who does all of his cars.T.D.Auto Services in Eaton Socan. Rang him and taking it there tomorrow for him to have a look at it, hopefully he can work out what the problem is and we can get it sorted. Will keep you posted.

Damn right - they can be a lot of trouble and expensive to fix, but need diagnosing properly.

Properly done injector leak off test and fuel pressure checks normally point to either injector or fuel pump problems.

If the cam sensor is at fault you get a specific code, same with EGR.

I work in multi franchise dealer (not just Ford) and we still must get 2 or 3 TDCI Fords in a week with running problems. Had Transit in Tuesday that had 2 injectors and a cam sensor, only this morning had an 02 Mondeo TDCI in with excessive leak off from 3 injectors causing FRP fault/ coil light flashing. At £297 + VAT each for Ford recon injectors, gone are the days where you just 'bang a set of injectors in it'

Went to see Tony at T.D. Autos yesterday and told him whats been going on. He confirmed that the 2.0 TDCI can be a pain in the arse, as are Volkswagons and all the modern diesel as they try and make them more fuel efficient. Going in next week for him to take a look at, hopefully gettin nearer to fixing the problem, as he does seem to be clued up on diesels. Fingers crossed. Will keep you posted.
