Is this good enough?
Hey,
New alternator needed for my 3 door cosworth. Just wondering if this one Mat found me on eBay is going to be good enough for my needs.
.......370537191644 item number for eBay. Will this come with a new regulator? Also do I need anything else while I'm on?.
If not, can anyone recommend me a decent one that isn't fortunes but is more than up to the job.
Thanks in advance, Ross.

God stuff.
Just wanted to make sure the output etc is what I needed. Will I need to take then pulley off the end of my current one to put on my new one? Or can you if you like? Just my current on has a billet end that's blue to match all other pulleys.

Which one would you recommend Brammer? You say the one I found was good quality, is this right?
Also, would having a new fuel pump and fan loom make a difference in deciding. As well as a cat1 alarm and tracker as well as all the original stuff?

Saph's are 90 due to extra electrical stuff.
3 doors are 70 standard but they are a known weak point and sometimes the cannot cope with the draw. Want to go for a 90 but need to know it still fits and that this won't be detrimental to anything else.

Ah, thats good news.
The one you linked me to has no pulley or fan. Im assuming these can be taken off current one.?
Also doesnt look like it has a regulator on the back either.

Oh really. Do you know if youve ever had a new alt?
Just ive managed to stumble across some info which says the original diodes were made in america and were dodgy, not making proper dc current, hense having to be revved alightly. Mine is exactly this, there were loads of users who posted saying the did the same thing, rev to over 2k.
Do the fans come off the front of alternator ok too?

70A is standard 3DR and indeed for alot of models, yes for the pulley on the front of the alternator you may need an "impact wrench" as it may try and turn the pulley otherwise when you try to undo it.
Rewiring makes no difference, there is no extra load, it just means the pump is getting the power it should do and so you are not left in danger due to the old wiring, whereas on the now old wiring it may not be able to as the wiring has builds resistance.
The fan loom is only half the problem, ideally you would have a switch with a better span fitted, known as an "Uprated" switch.
There is no reason why the 70A should not be upto the job, no all 90A would mean is the alternator can give a higher output when under needed, but if you don't have that demand then there is no point.
This is what later high spec models and Granadas had.
You should get a regulator otherwise I would be walking away!

Thanks again Martin. Huge help.
When i mean fan loom i also mean switch, i think. It will all be supplied and fitted by Paul at rs spares and im sure its the switch too.
Im just going to go for it. Its only like 60 quid.

Oh well im not sure, id have to check with him.
By doing this with the fans, does it stop the risk of a melted fuse box due to it circuit being that shit? I.e off low spec cars and not up to the job?

The loom was substandard to start with, (They wern't very well designed) the switch like with everything else was just pulled from the parts bin.
The trouble is the span of it, that being some 9 degrees, this closes and thus brings the fans on too early, and then they stay on for far to long!
Being "Juicy", coupled with the time they are on is what causes the fuse to melt, by replacing with the "Uprated" switch you have just a few degrees span and so fan cycles are short, plus rewire and you have solved the problem
