Just ive managed to stumble across some info which says the original diodes were made in america and were dodgy, not making proper dc current, hense having to be revved alightly. Mine is exactly this, there were loads of users who posted saying the did the same thing, rev to over 2k.

Do the fans come off the front of alternator ok too?
