Default Dilemma - Car or Bike?

In April im getting a tax rebate and decided to buy a car. I should have my license by then, if not a little later. But I'm on about £450 a month, and most insurance companies want over half that for insurance.

But my dad, aswell as a few mates, have suggested buying a 125cc motorbike instead. I got a quote of £250 a year (rather than a month! ) to insure. So now I'm genuinely considering getting one now. Not only that, but when I decide to get a car, I would have some no claims bonus (I think it carries from bike to car?). Also hopefully by october, when I'm 18, I'd be on real money rather than slave wages.

So logically, I should get a 125cc.

Problems though. Firstly, my mum isn't happy with me riding a motorbike. Her friends husband broke both his legs a few years back after coming off a motorbike (A real one, not a 125). Now my mum thinks all bikers end up like that. I have physical and medical tests this year so i'm not mad keen on being a cripple Also, I've never riden a motorbike before so I'm not at all confident on one, whereas I've done loads of lesson's in a car so I feel very comfortable and confident in one.

What would you do? Bike or car?

Thanks

I see what your saying and obviously if they both cost the same, it would definately be a car. But The cheapest quote for a car I can find for a cheapo runaround is £2100, whereas I checked on a different comparrison site last night and got a bike quote of £187 a year

Well a Bike is cheaper on paper BUT: Does this bike come with a helmet?

So that's:

£400 for AGV TiTec

£400 at least for a decent set of leathers or synthetics

£100 - 200 for the boots.

£0 for a sound system

£0 For the heater

£0 for smokes during the trek to work

Then theres the wheel chair when some idiot T-Bones you (Never seen him Officer)

I had bike but only for fun ..

Totally agree.....^^^^^

Daryl can you put a price on life or health....Seriously mate im not trying to piss on your corn flakes... I just think its safer for a young lad in a car these days... Well one that's got his head screwed on like you.

I've had bikes and I've lost mates.... Come to think of it I've lost 2 mates in car crashes....I'm not judging your capabilities or saying one better than the other.... But what i am saying is... I would feel safer knowing you took the car option IMO.

Agree with this too.
My parents grew up on bikes, and have lost quite a few friends on them.
It's down to you at the end of the day.
Don't use comparison sites, they just shaft you because Joe Average thinks It's the best place to get insurance. Get on the phone to Adrian Flux, or one of the insurance guys on here.

one idea is to by the bike and insure it, but do not use it on a regular basis - that is only if the insurance carries over the NCB to cars, as mentioned earlier

couple of mates have insured 50cc non runners to keep their NCB for their bike insurance as some bike insurers say if your off a bike for a year then you loose your NCB even though you are driving a car in the meantime

if you are not confident on a bike then keep clear, as confidence is the one of the major factors in keeping you alive when one day it all starts going wrong

Thanks for the replies everyone

Mat, I see what you mean about putting a price on health and that is one major consideration and that's the main thing that's putting me off. Like R06ert said, confidence is essential and I've never ridden one before.

I think what I'll do is, when I get the money, ring around the insurance companies to see if I cant get a realistic insurance quote.

I've got both and to be honest last year i much preferred the car. I had the feeling that everytime i was out on the bike someone was trying to kill me

Have it up for sale now and think i'll probably just go and get one for track days.

Darylc if you don't mind saying where did you get the bike quote from? That sounds cheaper than the quotes I've been getting.... And also what 125 was it for? Thanks

if you're queer, get a car - or man up and get a bike.

NCB won't carry over, but if you ride a bike for a couple of years and then get a car, your first insurance will be at 19, not 17 so will be cheaper anyway.
