A Mk I Pinto won't have an ECU. Easiest way would be to fit a battery disconnector. They have a thumbscrew which you undo to electrically disconnect the battery. You can also get them with a fuse link to keep radio memories and clocks etc. going. If you tried to start the car with just the small fuse link it would blow the fuse instantly.

It most likely does not have a electronic fuel pump, pretty sure it will be mechanical!

Personally I always err on the physical security side, as it will detter thiefs as well!

So a disc lock for example and a handbrake gear lever lock, only other thing you can do is have a alarm/immobilser system fitted, you need something though as security on them isn't a strong point!

If wanting a cheap/easy DIY option then you can fit a cut off to the ignition system!

I'm pretty sure it don't matter if it's elec or mech fuel pump as on old neighbour had this cut off switch on an old Morris minor and that saved it from being driven off - car only got a hundred yards before the fuel ran out in the pipes and would not start again so the thief legged it. The old boy jumped in, flicked a switch and parked it back outside his house

It does, Morris Minor has an electric fuel pump (SU to be precise) thus you can cut the power to it, mechanical fuel pumps are as the name suggests, i.e. driven from the engine, therefore there is no power to cut!

put it this way cut off switches and feul pump switches etc wont do much if a professional car theif wants your car he will have it and no doubt come prepared to steal it, yea switches will stop little idiots from taking out for a joy ride as they probably wouldnt know how to make a home made ignition loom that goes to the 2 plugs behind the dashboard and all they will know is how to cut a few wires about and break a steering lock, best thing you can do everynight is what i did, put your steering full lock to 1 side which will help stop if someone tried to use a toe truck to take it away and pull the lead off in the middle of your dizzy cap every night, or take the plug off of your ignition amplifier a bit so its not noticeable that its actually disconnected, that way, it cant be started and you will hear the silly theif trying and trying to start your car and no doubtedly wake you up before he figures it out and is off with your motor, dont know about you but my car was always parked on my drive with my window open a tad and my car made some noise when being started

the fuel cut off thing is possable even if its a early carb model car,.

you could fit a tap in the fuel line under the bonnet, switch the tap off and no fuel

or there was a company a few years back that did a electric fuel cut off valve. same princable as above but the tap had an electric solinoid in it and a switch in the car
