A Mk I Pinto won't have an ECU. Easiest way would be to fit a battery disconnector. They have a thumbscrew which you undo to electrically disconnect the battery. You can also get them with a fuse link to keep radio memories and clocks etc. going. If you tried to start the car with just the small fuse link it would blow the fuse instantly.
