I was on 28k a year, now I've had to take a job with a salary of less than 18k. Wife to pay for and Christmas coming up. As said sometimes you have to take what you can get...

I had been in the trade for 25 years and was an ex Ford Senior tech and MOT tester, was on just over Ł10 an hour.

The pay for being an experienced mechanic is shite.... thats why I work offshore now

agreed which is why alot of experienced techs are leaving the trade now as wages dont go up,usually dont even get a cost of living raise lol!

Wage stayed the same for the past 6 years and never went up !
Even though in that time the boss put the labour rate up by Ł12 an hour !!!

When I used to work in garages you didn't get any extra for being a tester only if you were a master technician, normal tech/tester Ł8 to Ł11 an hour, the only benefit my mot ticket brought me was doing my own cars

At my place techs don't get extra for MOT testing, but they have no salary. It's all commission. 25% of the labour they sell. MOT testing means you can sell more labour (test fee and repairing failures etc) I have a tester on about Ł40k but he does 11 hour days and works at a maniacs pace! Other techs take around 25 - 30k. That is a main dealer - Vauxhall.

makes you wonder why anyone wants to be a mechanic these days. Sure you might like working on cars but by the time you buy your own tools i bet your on minimum wage or less on average.

Theres liking a job but choosing a lifetime of poverty for a job you love doesnt make much sense these days as you have to have a bit of money to live sadly.
