Default 1981 XR3 starting problem

I have just put my engine in and back together, I have put a kent cam in and vernier pulley. I have set the timing correctly, filled up all the fluids.

I put the battery on, tried to start it and nothing. it just turns over.

Has anyone got any ideas?

Thanks

Paul

I have new plugs, leads, coil etc, the only things that is the same is the distributor, cap and rotor arm.

could it be the vac pipes? The other thing i noticed was the blue cable with the white strip was not connected at the alternator. this goes to the carb.

Had the same problem before on my astra gsi and I had the lead order completely wrong.
Try swapping the middle two leads and try again, see if it makes any difference.
Try pulling the airfilter out and spraying some lynx deodorant into the airbox then try starting it,that was the only way that my motorbike would start,it spluttered like mad,but eventually kicked into life.
It'll be something very minor on that.
One thing while I remember,if you've had the engine stripped for a while,do a quick compression test on it.
In my old Rs I had no compression on a known good bottom end, tried everything to improve it,just couldn't work it out.
A quick squirt of oil down each bore and it fired up straight away.
We did a compression test again after running it up and it was spot on.
I believe that engines still going today in some way or another from what I've been told so it was a good un.

Also old fuel turns to shit so try pulling the feed off to the fuel pump, connecting it directly to a fuel can/jar and try again.
If it's been standing over a year it seems to lose it's octane rating, not sure why?

I took one of the plugs out and found it is dry. Had a mooch about and looked at the fuel pump. The spacer between the pump and head is missing.
Does anyone know the thickness because i am going to make one tomorrow??

I have now made the spacer and fitted it, i put a new pump on and have fired it up. i ran for about 10 sec then cut out.

I checked the compression and all at 100 psi. I did check that fuel was coming up the feed pipe, but not after it ran. could it be fuel?

Also where does the choke wire connect to on the alternator?
