I have now made the spacer and fitted it, i put a new pump on and have fired it up. i ran for about 10 sec then cut out.

I checked the compression and all at 100 psi. I did check that fuel was coming up the feed pipe, but not after it ran. could it be fuel?

Also where does the choke wire connect to on the alternator?
