Default ST170 Help

Hi i'm new here. I have owned my 52 plate ST170 for 8 months and for most of that time it has had an annoying stutter. This happens mainly between 30-40mph in 3rd or 4th gear. The car dosent run as smooth as id like but when you go through the revs its fine and revs freely.

The stutter isnt like a miss fire. Its more like the engine holds back on and off for a couple of seconds. There are no fault codes but its been plugged into a snap-on diagnostic machine which shows the e-vac isnt working propely but i have already changed this and checked the vacume and other pipes coming from that and all seems fine.

Hope someone can help as my patience is really running out of patience and would like to sort it before i sell it in the next couple of weeks.

Right i have just done a few searches on the forum and threads come up with very similar problems. What is this common stutter (map problem) the st170's have?

There is a flutter at low rpm between 2000-2200, it almost feels like your driving into a strong wind and the car is holding back but at soon as you get through it the engine should rev freely. If your having issues throughout the rev range i would start to look at either the coil pack or fuel pump starting to fail

Sounds perfectly normal, a "decent" remap will get rid of it

Yes they all have it, its not the ECU itself but the engine map, they all have the same map so have the same stutter

Just having a dig around the site and came across this post, looks/feels like my recent 04 plate purchase had the 2000ish rpm stutter. How come Ford never came up with a fix for this problem if all ST170s have this problem ?

I owned a 170, very dissappointed with the car, a fuel filter change helped a little but it drank the stuff when you tried to eek out what little performance you had. Gearbox is a joke too. I prefered the raft of standard Mk1s ive owned over the years. The RS is definately the Mk1 to go for.

My ST170 was the same when bluefin wasnt installed.

Buy a bluefin or a remap and it should be fine

You need to "live data read" your Lambda probe

Had exactly same problem

Tried plugs, coil pack, leads etc - still "stuttered"

Replaced Lambda and now perfect and big improvement in fuel consumption

Good shout...I keep getting a 0420 error code which I believe is related to the lambdas so I'm planning on changing them soon anyway.

Anyone know where the best place to buy them from? Direct from ford I presume?

I had no codes present or EML light on

My Snap-On Solus ultra was able to "live read" the engine sensors etc

What I found was the Lambda gave a flatline constant reading regardless of revs, load, emmissions etc etc BUT because it was inbetween the minimum and maximum permitted parameters the ECU did not register a fault and therfore did not store a code or put a warning lamp on.

After replacing the lambda the "live reading" gave a "peak and trough" reading that altered with the engine load, speed, throttle position etc

As said before all is now perfect and better fuel consumption

Have found this on http://www.sparkplugs.co.uk/pages/pr...Sensor-ccp.asp

Haven't got the ability to live feed. Is there any software available to use with a laptop? Currently only have a basic obd reader.

But i see what your saying.

They aren't badly priced but isn't the preferred replacement bosch?

No need to replace both as only the one was "flatlining"

I replaced Sensor 1 Bank 1 Upstream - the one nearest the engine
