Default Joint insurance on one car?? Confused.

Currently the Mrs and I are sharing a car. I am a named driver on her policy, but I dont earn any NCB... which isn't really ideal because I am getting murdered on insurance policies for not having any NCB.

I am trying to work out if it is possible to have one insurance policy on one car for two people and for each person to earn their own NCB?

But I can't seem to find any policies that do this. Do such policies even exist? Or am I just going to have to bite the bullet and pay two policies?

Think some take into account if you're on another policy but I can't say which ones sorry. Best to phone a broker I would think.

Hi MadMac,

Compare car insurance quotes at Quotezone.co.uk.

Simply fill in our online form and you can compare over 90 prices from some of the top UK insurers in one go. Click Here

I would suggest ringing your chosen insurer and fully explaining your situation. Say that you have no NCB in your own name but have had a number of years experience as a named driver on a policy.

I know a number of our panel members offer discounts based on this but it is recommended that you contact the insurer to check details in full.

Hope this helps.

Thanks

Jonny

directline!

Direct Line Launches Industry First No Claims Discount for Additional Drivers
Direct Line today launched a unique no claims promise enabling motorists to save hundreds of pounds on their car insurance. Anyone named on a Direct Line car insurance policy can now build up his or her own no claims discount, regardless of whether the principal policyholder has a claim. This means that when they take out their own insurance they are able to transfer their no claims entitlement to their own policy, potentially saving them up to 70% off their insurance.
Until now named drivers have been unable to build up their own no claims meaning that even if they had no accidents they would have to start from zero years no claims when they take out a policy of their own.
Direct Line is the only insurer to honour NCD for named drivers and estimates that 18 million motorists are currently driving on someone else’s policy, all with the potential to earn their own NCD.
The new policy is now open to all customers and for existing customers can be backdated to a maximum of five years.
Named drivers of any age can benefit from the policy and it is expected to be of particular interest to young drivers who often struggle to take out their first insurance and consequently drive their parents car for the first two or three years of driving meaning with any other insurer they are simply postponing the problem.
With Direct Line they would benefit from a 30% discount had they been driving for two years under their parents policy.
The following examples show the discounts available with Direct Line on a fully comprehensive policy, whereas with any other insurer the driver would start off with 0% no claims.
Scenario one: male, 21 years old, three years driving experience on his dad’s policy would get a 50% discount.
Scenario two: female, 38, been driving on husband’s policy for seven years would get a 65% discount.
Scenario three: male, 50, been driving on a friend’s policy for five years would get a 70% discount.
Emma Holyer, Motor Spokesperson for Direct Line commented:
“No other insurer recognises named drivers in this way and this is major step forward for those 18 million motorists who have been paying over the odds for their insurance. We don’t think it is fair that named drivers who have experience behind the wheel cannot benefit from their safe driving experience.”

Notes to Editors:
Named driver No Claims Discount (NDNCD) applies to any person who is named on an existing policy. A spouse partner, children or friends can build up their own ‘Named Driver No Claims Discount’.
Policyholders can ‘top up’ their earned NCD with NDNCD when it exceeds earnt NCD. For example, if a policyholder has one year earned NCD and two years NDNCD they can claim a total of two years.
The discounts will be backdated to the date that the driver was added to the primary policy.
This does not apply to temporary drivers.
The scale of discounts is as follows:
One year - 30%
Two years – 40%
Three years – 50%
Four years – 60%
Five years – 65%
Five years and p/h aged over 50 – 70%

Thank you, but I was getting quotes for £3,000 on your site, all because I am not the legal owner of the vehicle. So, no thats not helping me.

some insurers will offer you a no claims discount as a named driver, but this is only valid with the same insurance company, it is not transferable. Only way to but up your NCD is to get something insured.

Bollocks, basically means having to buy a car sooner than I was planning too, might awell pay the money on the car and not on the insurance.

The thing that has to be remebered is this; if two people insure a car and it is written off or stolen or whatever only the legal owner stands to lose out. Therefore a vehicle cannot be insured twice as if it is stolen two amounts of money would be paid out and one person would be in a better position.

If a vehicle could be insured twice then I would insure my next door neighbours XC90 which is worth £30k and pray it was stolen!

Hi
Hope this helps, you can only have one insurance policy on a vehicle( no limit on number of insured drivers) and only the person who legally owns it can insure it, as because you dont own the vehicle then you have no insurable interest in the vehicle, it stands to reason really as why would you insure something that does not belong to you cheers dave
