Default getting a tyre off at home?

how hard is it to remove/refit a tyre diy at home?

reason i ask is cos if it snows early like they are saying i have a set of snow chains, but dont want to shag the alloys so will use them on a pair of steelies from the scrappers, but they all have fucked tyres on.

i have 3 spare pirelli p6000 at home home with decent tread so will bang one of those on and just take it for balancing.

it cant be that hard can it, using levers etc not worrying about the rim.

You can buy second hand wheels and tyres so cheap, why would you even bother trying ?

Or just buy snow tyres

Where abouts are you? I could do it if your not to far away ,I was a truck tyre fitter for years and we fit those by hand no machine so car Tyres are a peace of piss as long as there not low profiles or alloys can do alloys but there's a chance it might bend

Lol, why would you even try this?! The tyre forms a seal to the rim which is not easy to break.

I've done it before, i had a pile of old steelies with tyres at the bottom of the garden and my mum decided she wanted to use the tyres as plant pots
I used a bottle jack under the work bench in the shed to push down on the tyre and break the bead, then some big tyre leavers to pull the tyre off. Then i suppose, as per haynes, refitting is the reverse of removal.

Got a few tyres off at home - Easiest way I've found is to get the wheel under a jacked up car, bit of wood on the tyre, and lower the car down on top. Takes a bit of effort to get the tyre off after that but nothing too bad.

Loads of videos on Youtube of rednecks getting tyres off in all exotic ways

Drive over edge of tyre, this will break the bead. Get some decent levers and remove.
You dont have much choice if your 4wdriving

Had proper tyre levers and a hand press for breaking beads at my old job, even then it was fucking difficult, if it's a low-ish profile tyre then you have no chance. Plus even if you get the new tyres on you will need to get them balanced anyway. You get over to corsham much? Take them into corsham tyres, they charge £1 per inch to swap tyres, I should imagine they'll do it cheaper if the wheels aren't on the car.

its getting them back on thats going to be the hard part. cut old tyres off before thats no drama.

im talking a 195/50/15 pirelli, so not low profile onto a steel rim that can get scratched etc not a brand new of rims.

my dads mate does it with levers and i think my mate has got some i could borrow.

then just need balancing.

fitting the tyre costs very little, it's the balancing that is expensive, as they can't use lead weights anymore

no, its the fuckers fitting tyre you supply that costs a lot!

i know as i had a set fitted for combe in july and got fleeced!

they quoted me £10 a tyre to fit, x 5 tyres...

then decided not to charge me that it ended up double. and i was not fucking happy...

so ill DIY thanks!

as they will only be going on if it snows i may not even bother to balance them as i wont be going fast!

Getting it off is tricky, getting it back on is just a case of a load of lighter fluid and a match.

so you just have a rim, a tyre, throw a load of lighter fuel over them both and chuck on a match??

doesnt the tyre have to be on the rim for that to work lol

in july this year i took my puma on track at rs combe, bought a set of 4 tyres off ebay and got quoted a price of £10 per wheel to have the tyres fitted. i said while they were doing it to change the tyre off the spare steelie as that was fucked and replace with the best of the p6000 they took off.

so i was expecting a bill of £50

i go back to collect the car later that day to be told that he decided not to charge £10 per wheel, and that they had charged me an hour labour, plus £5 a wheel balancing - plus VAT = just short of £100.

i was then pretty fucked off having received no phone call to tell me that this is what they were now going to do, felt fleeced and will not be using them again for anything...

so ill DIY thanks!

in future i will endevour to do as much as i can myself, not paying some silly cunt to rip me off

as they will only be going on if it snows i may not even bother to balance them as i wont be going fast!

as low speeds will be used while driving in snow, balancing may not be required as i wont be going fast enough to cause any issues

understand now?????

good!

True, but there are smaller tyre places all over the country that are usually friendly enough for that type of thing.
Hell, even the big places here wouldnt charge that much.
