i have a big turbo escort when started from cold it runs perectly clean no smoke at all and the same when hot but sometimes when driving say at 1800 to 2000 rpm and i accelerate it puffs some smoke not blue more of a blacky colour if i stop at side of road nothing i have smelt the smoke and it does not smell oily it also does it if i have been coasting down hill at the above rpms and accelerate it does not do it when it is boosting well any ideas please

Black smoke is usually a sign of over-fuelling.

 

When was the last time it was set up? Will be worth getting done if its been a while.

mine is doing the same as yours i think mine is over fueling

took escort into be looked at left it with em and several hours later got the call turns out proper crap mapping been running way to lean and has started to melt no4 piston but looks like the bore is ok so got to strip down again i know wish id had it mapped after last time so looks like a expensive one
